Multiple routers on same lan.

Hi. My router downstairs isn't providing me a viable connection upstairs, so I was wondering if I could just plug my second router into the ethernet port upstairs and have a separate network up here. I know that the IPs will overlap, so I was just wondering if it was simple to do it.

Hi. I did read through some forum posts that said this, but all of them said that I had to have the AP actually connected to the main router. I actually can't really do that, and I want them to be separate wireless networks.

If there is an ethernet cable from the main router to upstairs, that is all you need.
Disable most of the "router" functions from the second device, and have it be an Access Point, delivering WiFi upstairs.
