Question Multiple Samsung SV843 SSDs Unable to be Initialized, reduced capacity, good SMART

For a project requiring mass storage I have been slowly accruing used enterprise SSDs. Today I installed 2 Samsung MZ7WD960HMHP 960GB SSDs I bought used from the same seller.

The drives are detected by the system, however any program that tries to access these drives either is very very slow or flat out fails. For example, opening disk management or CrystalDiskInfo takes an abnormally long time to detect the drives. Both applications are able to see these SSDs just fine, and the 2 SSDs have 98 and 99% health with no SMART flags.

Both of these SSDs show up as a lower capacity than expected.

Disk management is unable to initialize either drive and displays an IO error. I attempted to use gparted in a Ubuntu to format the drives. Gparted takes a very long time to scan for drives and then throws an error 2 times. Unfortunately I don't remember what the error said exactly. Neither of the 2 drives are displayed in Gparted.

Specs:
i7 4770s
Asus Q87M-E
24GB Ram
AcBel 600W Gold
Windows 10, Ubuntu

1x Samsung PM871b 128GB Boot drive
2x Samsung PM863a 960gb (working perfectly)
2x Samsung SV843 960GB (problematic)
All drives are plugged directly into the SATA ports on the motherboard.

I tried putting just one of these SV843 drives into an entirely different system also running windows 10 and the behavior was exactly the same.

I ran Samsung DC Toolbox and after some time it does recognize all of these drives correctly.

I attempted to secure erase one of these drives but the program failed. I wanted to flash the firmware on these, however I do not have an image of the factory firmware to use.

What is going on here? Are the drives faulty?
One thought I had is that these drives have been modified in some way, but I am unsure as to what, how, or why, and base this solely on the fact they are overprovisioned. I am unsure how to revert them if this is the case. I can still return these drives but would only like to do this as a last resort as its a hassle. Will message the seller and ask about this issue in the meantime.

Thanks, I'll take a look at this.

"smasnug.exe" ???

Doesn't Samsung know how to spell its own name?

Can you upload a full text dump of the Identify Device data in CrystalDiskInfo?

Select Edit -> Copy Options and tick all the boxes
Select Edit -> Copy to place all the data in the clipboard
Open NotePad and type Ctrl-V to paste the clipboard contents, or paste the data into your next post.

I'm wondering whether the capacity of each drive has been truncated with a HPA, for over-provisioning purposes (as you have speculated). If so, then there are tools (eg HDAT2 or Seagate's SeaTools) which can restore the full capacity.

No, it was just easier to type smasnug.exe into CMD instead of "Samsung_SSD_DC_Toolkit_for_Windows.exe" so I renamed it. There is a missed reference there.

For the SMART report both of these drives were connected to an old AMD FX machine I have lying around rather than the machine from the original post. Ignore the Netac 256gb SSD boot drive reporting 0% health. It works just fine and has had 0% SMART health for like a year for some reason. Perhaps you have a clue?

Bit #10 of word #82 in the Identify Device block is set to 1, so these drives do support the Host Protected Area feature set. You should be able to use SeaTools to determine the native max address and to reset the capacity to max, if the drive is working ...

You could try to determine the security status of each drive with GSmartControl. Perhaps they are protected by a password??? (I don't think so)

The system likes to hang for like a minute at a time randomly with these drives installed, makes it painful to open programs like this. Mostly explorer.exe throwing a fit.

But definitely some good information here. It cannot resize the LBA to native size, fails every time I try to run it. Probably because of the security enabled.

Working on getting gsmartcontrol

Thank you Colif and Fzabkar, with your help I got the drives back to working properly.

Documenting the solution in detail in case it helps someone out in the future.

I created a Ubuntu Live USB and used hdparm (preinstalled) via terminal.
Listed the location of each of the drives, in my case the paths were "SDB" and "SDC"
sudo hdparm -I [path]
Listed attributes for each drive, including the security status as either "locked" or "not locked"
sudo hdparm --user-master m -- security-unlock "" [path]
Ran this on each drive to perform a PSID Revert and remove the drive security.
sudo hdparm --user-master m -- security-erase "" [path]
Then I ran this on each drive.

Now the SSDs were both accessible in gparted. I rebooted into windows and disk manager now opened quickly, saw both drives, and initialized them. The capacity was still reduced at this point.

So I fired up SeaTools and had it set the maximum LBA amount on each drive, which brought the capacity back up from 820 usable to about 900GB.

I'll inform the seller they forgot to disable the security on these drives. I can only imagine most of the people that bought these are wanting to return them.

I'm cynical. I expect that the seller probably knew the real status of the drives and just didn't care. I would first try to return them and see what they say.

Congratulations anyway.

BTW, a PSID revert requires that you enter a 32-byte hexadecimal number that is printed on the label of the drive. Instead, you appear to have disabled the security by supplying a null master password.

I just noticed that the Power_On_Hours count is 47815, whereas the normalised value has dropped from 100 to 90. This would suggest that Samsung rates this SSD for 478150 hours, ie 54 years.

I would let this SSD run for 10 hours, say, and record the POH count before and after. Perhaps each unit corresponds to 10 minutes rather than 1 hour???

You might also check the manufacture date on the label.

Very possible the seller knew this. I messaged them the other day saying they wouldn't initialize and asking if the drives had been modified in some way. Waiting on a response.

Ah okay. Pretty happy about the result nonetheless.

Might try that at some point once the system is all set up.

SSDs are buttoned up in the system right now so I can't look at the label easily, however I remember seeing both of the SV843s were mfd in 2015, don't remember the month.

I got ripped off with these SV843 drives. Listing phone showed a drive with a newer DOM and they were listed as completely normal working wiped drives with no mention of security.

The PM863as I installed in here are from 2 different sellers. They are DOM in 2017 and dec 2018 with 42 tbw and just 3.8 tbw respectively. Worked straight away when plugged in with squeaky clean SMARTs.

So the SV843s are older, far more power on hours, and required hours worth of diagnosis and hair pulled to make them work. But yet they weren't any cheaper than the PM863as. Great deal!

At least the SV843s have a larger wear rating, around 4pbw iirc.

I'm not going to return them since they are now good working drives that cost me $25.99 each, and I can't really get drives that cheap easily.

I just confirmed that my 860 Evo increments the POH attribute by 1 count every hour. The SSD has been running 24/7 for 3+ years and has racked up 30,500 hours. The normalised value is at 93, which suggests that the SSD is rated for 50 years.

One of my 860 EVOs is reporting as 40,841 POH in CrystalDiskMark. 5 years old next week, 24/7.
Still going strong.

I'm not too terribly concerned about POH on enterprise drives, being on all the time is kind of what they are designed for.

I'm going to set these up with 1 drive redundancy now, but might add another redundant drive here shortly
