is it possible to have more than one pci sound card working at the same time? I have an emu 0404 for recording and am considering getting a new sound card for surround sound, will i be able to use these at the same time?

thanks

I believe it is possible to run 2 sound cards at once. You just have to specify which sound card to use in your diff apps.
There is definatly a possibility of conflict but you really have no way of knowing until you get both cards installed.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Its worth a shot, but buy that 2nd card from somewhere with an excellent return policy and no restocking fees!

If you are planning on outputting digitaly to an external reciever and you are not looking for a hardcore gamers sound card, then there is another option.

You can buy a cheap USB 2.0 sound card with spdif passthrough. You won't get 7.1 in games but you will from media files. If it interferes with your recording you can just unplug it.

I don't know how well it works, but considering all it would have to do is pass through a signal without processing it in any way it should do the trick.
