Multiple Tabs Being Open Lock Up

Multiple tabs open, locks chrome (and Firefox) browser - what is the fix?

I don't have any viruses and my startup is pretty Spartan. This has been getting worse. I'm suspecting a cache of some sort is becoming bloated - maybe I can clear/reset it?

No, not adware. This is something Chrome is doing. If I had to guess, I'd say that it is cacheing the tabs, then taking ages to retrieve them because they do eventually open, or close when I click on the Close buttons. Nothing untoward shows up on Chrome's Task Manager either.
