Sounds not unlike Patriot's Supersonic Magnum sticks. They were pretty much SSDs in USB form factor as well (an eight-channel controller tied to a bunch of NAND chips). You could tickle 200MB/s read and over 100MB/s write with one of those.

The SanDisk Extreme USB 3.0 drives are similar: essentially their U100 SSD with a SATA->USB bridge chip.
