To be honest with all of you its a wonder you guys even talk to me considering what pc i have compared to all of yours. In fact now that I have read some of the posts I am ashamed to even ask my dumb question because they are so old school for you guys. But please bear with me sas ima doing the best i can with what i Have. please continue to help this dumb old gal as she has nowhere else to turn to. My question may be boring to you but thet are important to me. Regardless whether you all continue to help or not all you you have been a tremendous help to me and i read every single answer I just hate to have to choose one as the best answer cuz to me they are all best answers. So Thanx to all of you out there. I read where one person's budget to build a pc was 5 grand that is only bout 3 grand short of my yearly income.

The point of overclocking was originally to squeeze as much as you could out of as little as you could. I'm new here , but with 14 years of blowing up computers under my belt I find no question stupid. NOT asking questions makes you more apt to make wasteful mistakes no matter how much money you have , just because you have gobs of money to throw at something doesn't make you superior , sometimes it can mean you wasted a fistful of dollars when something could have been tweaked to get the same results for far less.

Unfortuenatly on her system, you can't overclock :(
dell optiplex 260 pentium 4 cpu single ore speed 2Ghz 500 & 320 gig harddrives onboard graphic(intel graphic extreme) 1 gig ram HPw2207 flatscreen monitor lg dvd burner, IO magic external dvd burner, samsung cd and plexor enternal cd burner

Hah. $5K. I stick to $1500ish and upgrade the parts inside every 1-2 years (normally GPU).

$5K to me is overkill but some people want the epeen.

My first system was a 2.4GHz 400MHz FSB Pentium 4, 512MB of DDR, a nVidia 440MX and a 60GB Seagate HDD. I slowly upgraded the parts (mobo first to a P4P800 Deluxe, the best at the time) and had a 3.4GHz EE (got for $150 on EBay), 2GB of Corsair XMS, a X850XT and 2 120GB Seagates in a RAID 0.

Then when I started working more, I moved up and put $1500 for a build in 2007 that lasted me till 2012 (except GPU which I upgraded twice from HD2900 to HD4870 then HD5870).

My suggestion is to save up about $1000 and you can easily build a great system these days.

Thanx you made this old gal feel better. This pc originally had only a 20 gig hard drive and cd-rom. I thought i had done something when I upgradedfrom a 20 gig to a 500 and 320 gighard drive and added an internal and external dvd burner and an external cd burner. But tomorrow I am getting a dual core pc (Given to me) by a friend it takes an amd cpu which it is mising, otherwise it is complete and i got an ati rage pro 128 32mb graphic card today but haven't installed cuz I don't know if I have to dl a driver for ti or where to dl from. again Thanx

If you can tell us the motherboard brand & model of that PC, we could advise you of the best processor to go with it. Perhaps the giver know what it is or if not, you can physically take a look yourself as the brand & model are printed on the motherboard itself.

Try this site: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/legacy-xp.aspx
The ati rage Pro is AGP card. So only after knowing your motherboard brand & model will we be able to say if it fits in there. But anyway, you said that the PC given to you is complete except for the processor so let us know what other parts it have as soon as you get it.

Thanx I know that now and have met some bery wonderful and kind people here. I was kjnda in the dumpz cuz i had just purchased a vid card and couldn't get it to work. A dell tech had told me it was the one i needed but when i went back to online chat with dell they couldn't help me. I was given a MSI mobo with 4gig of ram same day in a case minus the cpu have several people trying to find me one for it. the specs for it is in a new thread titled for those from hard forum and others under graphic cards( where thread actualy started). Just in case you don't know i am disabled and in a wheelchair and live on a very small fixed income and because of my special needs have very little money to upgrade and after purchasing a vid card that would not work it upset me terribly. lease understand i don't begrudge anyone having better cuz i have learned to live within my means. 4745454b and rick criswell (user name not real name ) is trying tofind me a 940 pin dual core for other computer. I do not expect charity just some one to work with me and can pay the first of the month for it if it isn't too much money. Thanx for replying to me and hope i can count you as one of my friends here at Tom's Hardware. I will also take jabs at my self because i have learned to live with and even embrace my limitations so please don't be offended if i make fun of myself that is just the way i am.
