I take it that mutators are the UT version of Mods for Quake. I see that UT
has a Giant mod that makes a player bigger the more frags they get. This
seems like the equivlent of a handicap for Quake. I think this is a very
good idea for games between friends. It keeps friends being friends.

The best game between friends is where you are able to tell who the best
player is but everyone should get around the same amount of frags.
Yes? No?

Are there other mutators that allow you to keep the game equal for players
of diffrent skill levels?

Mutators are a form of mod which can be added to any gametype.

Not really - it affects your visibility but nothing more. The Quake
handicap affects your health, but not your visibility.

Definitely.

Don't know... I'm thinking about making one for UT2k4.

Actually mutators are a little different. To write a Quake mod you have to
hack the client source code, usually to the tune of dozens of source files.
Unreal gives you an object oriented scripting language which allows you to
override specific features (e.g. weapons) on a piecemeal basis. That's kind
of a triumph of computer science but tends to lead to so many gameplay
variations that I sometimes have a hard time finding two servers playing the
same game.

I always thought the best game was one in which I was able to learn
something. That generally happens when I watch a much better player in
action. In my case it happened a lot. :)

I've never even seen an automated handicapping system in action which
suggests it isn't as easy as it sounds. But in any event I think you are on
the wrong track by considering variation in skill level to be a programming
problem. No matter what game you play, unless you happen to be a world class
player you will eventually run into somebody who can really kick your ass
but good. You can get frustrated and quit or you can practice up against the
best players you can find to improve your skill level. I think that is a
property of gameplay which needs no fixing.
