[SOLVED] MX500 vs 950 pro (500GB) Which one to buy?

Which drive would you buy?
-MX500 500GB for 80€ (new)
-950 Pro 500GB for 110€ (secondhand as new) (comes with icybox pcie adapter)

Looking forward to your replies.

For what use?

A 'used' drive is a non starter for me.
A 'used' drive that is a 5 year old model is another strike against.

For me, no contest. The MX500.

For gaming it really makes little difference what SSD you pick unless you care about maybe 5 seconds of loading times.

Forget the gaming part for a second.

I value your opinions but what if they were both new and their costs were 80€/110€ respectively?

As you can see the drive is basicly new even after, let's say a year of use.
According to some other thread here on tomshardware, the same cannot be said about the MX500.

We use many MX 500 drives where I work and have not had any problem with them in all the years they’ve been in service. it’s a fantastic drive. As noted before I wouldn’t use five-year-old technology next to a new drive especially if that five-year-old design was a used drive.

If they were both new, and you had the relevant motherboard to utilize the NVMe 950....a bit of a tossup.

Don't forget - "almost new" = Used.
Does the warranty convey to the next owner (you)?

I can always upgrade my system and keep the 950pro. Might be a year or 2 years.

But going for an older MLC drive (cheaper then price upon release) makes more sense to me then going for a brand new TLC drive.

Warranty is nice but do you really believe I will need it? I see the TLC drive fail long before the MLC drive fails.

So I'm not sure what makes you say that its a bad idea to go for the MLC drive.

The only reason I can come up with is you must have had a lot of bad luck in the past or bought a first gen Nvme drive with lots of issues.

Warranty - Not likely, but possible.
I had a 960GB Sandisk die, Dec 2018. 33 days past the 3 year warranty. Sandisk did me a solid and gave me a new drive anyway.

I'm just saying the warranty may be needed. Don't discount the value of that.
Unlikely, but possible.

With the used drive, you'd be out of luck.

It wasn't 2 for the price of one. I still only have the one drive, the replacement. The original Sandisk was dead dead dead.


You asked for opinions. Me personally, I'd buy the MX500. Not a fan of used drives, no matter what type.

I have bought motherboards, gpu's, HDD's... All used without warranty.
Never had anything die on me before because it was used and out of warranty.

I can understand that now.

But I think it would be worth the risk with a samsung nvme. Knowing the drive is still in good health.

Edit: Just didn't expect everyone to opt the new drive.
