I have a Logitech MX510 mouse that a couple of weeks ok, started disconnecting briefly. It may go for days with no problem and then fail multiple times in an hour. I get a beep, the red light goes out and a second later its back on. I've disassembled it and blown out dust - almost none.

Since this is the best mouse I ever had, I'd like to fix it, and also the wheels been customized, by my adjusting the spring tension. Its normally plugged into a mother board USB port, I've also tried in a powered hub, but I'm not sure if it failed there - since the failure is not predictable. How can I tell if its repairable? I can get replacement cable on eBay for $6,if that worth trying. [lol - its 7 years old]

I have a new M510 wireless mouse, but have not opened it yet, I'm not sure its quite the same.

Solution
typically with these mice the problem is the cord, where it connects to the mouse internally. it can be fixed by taking it apart and resoldering the connection. possibly with a new cable.

it plagues these mice. which is a real shame because otherwise they are outstanding.

you'll notice the disconnection happens when moving the mouse around. if you play around with it you will notice what i am saying is true.

i have the same issue and have managed to minimize it by flipping the mouse over into various positions. additionally i upgraded to windows 8.1 from windows 7 and the disconnect reconnect times are drastically faster. with windows 7 it takes a great deal of time to reinstall the mouse on reconnect but with windows 8.1 its nearly...

Thanks that's great, I have to solder some replacement keys in my keyboard this week, so I'll try messing with the mouse also.

I'm on WIN XP, and getting a new computer and moving to Win7 - so thanks for the comment on that.

Follow up-----since your answer indicated its repairable I played with the mouse cord and gently eased it back into the mouse - without bothering to open the mouse or trying to solder. [The location of the mouse does mean that I have a tendency to pull on the cord and strain the connection when using it.] Since I did that adjustment, the mouse has disconnected less then 5 times over the last 12 days.

Thanks
