My 10 year old home built PC (i5 2500K generation) is failing to boot to Windows. This error is not new, it would happen once in a while, (1 in 20 say) but a restart would always fix it until now. The OS is loaded on a SSD and most of my larger programs are on a HHD. I figure the SSD has died.

Question 1: Most of the files I would like to access were saved to the Windows desktop. Is it safe to say those files were on the SSD and and not on the HHD? And therefore most likely gone with the failed SSD?

Question 2: Unfortunately I’m too busy with family and work to home build a new PC. Is there a consensus what type of pre-built PCs are popular with a reasonable budget? ($1500-800 range). I’ve been out of the loop hardware wise and was looking for some advice.

Ill probably stop by a local PC repair shop to see if PC repair or data recovery is feasible / affordable.

Thanks in advance. Tom’s was very helpful those 10 years ago helping with my first and only home built PC.

SSD might not be dead. Might be a simple file system corruption instead.

What error do you get? Can you show a screenshot?

You don't replace whole pc just because of a failed storage device.
Replace only failed part - the storage device.
