My 1TB WD external hard drive is not initialized and all the memory is unallocated. I can't change drive path or initialize it. When I attempt to initialize an I/O error pops up

Windows 7 and newer does not need initialization. In Disk Manager, simply right click on the drives rectangle and choose format and follow the pop up instructions. If it doesn't show up in Disk Manager, you could attempt to remove it from the external enclosure and install it inside your computer ( unless it is a laptop, you will need to use a desktop! ) and format there. Then return it to the enclosure.
