My specs:

asus p5b-deluxe (latest BIOS)
C2d e6600 @ 3.4 ghz
SB Audigy (old one, SE or somesuch)
4 x 1 gig Supertalent DDR 2 800
nvidia 8800 gts (600 mg)
Vista enterprise 32 bit

The sequence of events below is no doubt off a bit.

1. Decided to add memory to my 2 gig Vista/xp dual boot system so I installed 2 new Super Talent 1 gig sticks (now have all 4 slots populated with identical 1 gig sticks. I am aware I will not see all 4 gigs in a 32 bit os. I just want the 3+/- you can get)

2. Vista boots, then blue screens immediately, memory problems mentioned on the BSOD.

3. Boot up memtest - errors.

4. Tried to lower memory speed (bus, not timings, which are already lax 5,5,5,15) but at 750 or so it appears to be as low as it goes at this bus speed (380).

5. Back way off OC, down to 300 mhz bus (2700 cpu I think) which lowers RAM speed too.

6. Vista runs fine, or so it seems.

7. Gradually increase bus speed until Vista seems to run fine at 370 bus speed.

8. Noticed at some point sounds of startup wave in Vista were breaking up.

9. Tried turning on memory remap in bios. Bios shows all 4 gig when previously it showed only 3 but now Vista and XP show only 2 gig!? Turned off remap. Back to 3 gig in Vista (2.92 actually) I guess remap is for 64 bit?

10. At last seem stable in Vista at 750 bus (about 3.4 gig CPU I think). This will be OK I figure for an extra gig of ram. But now my sounds are all screwed up. Sounds break up and stutter whenever I do anything, even resizeing a window. Sound in games are horrible.

11. Sounds in XP are fine however (dual boot), only screwed in Vista. Re-install sound drivers in case repeated crashes have messed them up. No help. Re-boot repeatedly, turn off all programs running in bkgrnd, sound problem will not go away.

12. Take out the new RAM sticks and sound problem goes away!

13. Put them back in and it returns!

14. Still 4 sticks in slots and I try memory re-map again, Stll only 2 gig ram show up in XP and Vista and still have sound problem.

15. Turn off re-map, reboot and now sound problem is gone! TEA OOPS, justa lucky boot I guess, rebooted again and problem has returned.

That sounds like a reasonable theory.

Yes, I can go to 64 bit easy enough. That's a complete re-install? Or can you upgrade?

And how about 64 bit these days? Will I find drivers? It seems SB and Nvidia have 64 bit drivers but I'm just a little unsusre about trying it. Any other problems with software, games? Thanks.

Well,Guy,s I just got 4 gig on mine! ABIT KN9 SLI AM2 6000 4 gig (800)

OK! So you just got your NEW dual cpu 4gig VISTA 64bit machine, and it crashed as soon as you TRIED

to install it(crash city) BSOD and a auto reboot!

and when it boots you see only 3 gig,BUT I have 4 you say!

SO! What do you do!

32bit machines only access around 2 gig!

64bit has a wider memory 120bits vs 64bits

for the motherboard to see this it MUST have!

1 > Memory hole remapping :hello:

( found in the DRAM config area)

(make sure it is ENABLED) and your Motherboard SUPPORTS it! :sol:

Your CPU is hardware DEP active..most dual CPU's are! :bounce:

you need to DOWNLOAD This file

Windows6.0-KB929777-v2x64 or the 32bit version from MS....

Now that you have all this! you do this!

1 >you MUST REMOVE the last 2 gig of memory! before installing otherwise you will be doing it forever!BSOD :fou:

2 >INSTALL Vista 64bit

3 > install the Hotfix! :sol:

4 > install all the drivers ,etc :sol:

Reboot, then turn off, reinstall the two gig of memory

and reboot! :ouch:

I now have 4 gig working purrfectly!

Good luck
