I upgraded my 8800 GTS 640mb to an XFX 5850 today, I and I am getting lackluster results in Crysis Warhead. I just ran benchmarking with Fraps.

1920x1200
Everything on Gamer, no motion blur
DX9
No AA
Average fps=21.231

Pretty damn low, I think my 8800 was doing about that.

My PC
XFX 5850
Q6600 @2.4ghz
4gb ddr 2 ram
Windows 7 32 bit

I know my q6600 is a bit of a bottleneck, but should I be getting that low of an fps? Im going to overclock my CPU to 3.0ghz when I get my new cooler, but I don't think it will help that much when it is performing as pitiful as it is now.

I already ran driver sweep to rid my pc of any nvidia drivers. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

if uping the resolution shows little to no performance gain, thats indicative of a CPU bottleneck.

so yes, an OC should help. though to be honest, i don;t think thats the main problem here, as you should still be getting a higher frame rate than that.
if you didn't catch my suggestion before, try turning motion blur down or off.

we may have found the problem.

now its nto something ive taken notice of for a while, but i believe the bottleneck on a card of that power would be fairly noticeable on PCIe 1.0

hopefully someone else can confirm, but that sounds like the issue right there.

Well, testing at 2.4ghz showed that fps didn't change that much between high and low res and max details, chaingng to 3.4 does make a difference, more than I remember at 800 x 600, jumped to about 45 fps over about 30 which is a bit low compared to the original crysis but would have to check more.

Playing at normal res showed pretty much no improvement whatsoever over 2.4 at least to me using the displayinfo command.

Won't be able to test more till saturday minimum as am busy tomorrow and off to bed now.

I just overclocked my q6600 on stock coolers to 3.0ghz to give it a little test run in Crysis.

Here are my 3.0ghz results. Direct x 9, Windows 7 64bit.

All enthusiasts settings, no aa, no motion blur

1920x1200=27.98 average fps

800x600=29.76 average fps.

Im starting to get very frustrated. It seems as if nothing I do is helping out the FPS and no matter what I am not going to get the most potential out of my 5850.

I don't even want to think about how high I would have to overclock it so that it is not a bottleneck if 3.0ghz doesn't even net me a single fps gain from 2.4ghz.

Im all out of ideas...

Man maybe you just got a bad card or something I dunno. But With max details no aa that looks a bit off I expected at least 34+ fps.. I achieve 30.9 running FPS with my settings but my setup is slightly morepowerful than yours. quite odd.

^Do you know a good benchmark tool that just tests to see how powerful or how well everything is running at the moment?

Also, just because I am troubleshooting everything, perhaps it is not installed properly in my PC?

When I installed it I just plugged two PCIe cables into the back of the card and ran them both to my 520W corsair power supply. Did I miss anything? I know I am just reaching now, but I don't want to exchange it for a new card.

Try a new card. Thats what I think you should do. I remember something like this happened to me after I bought my new Voodoo5 5500. I was getting crappy fps as well. It turned out to be the card..

Well, ive played Crysis on 8AA on 1680x1050 (my 2,5 years 20 inch monitor doesnt go any higher than that) on ultra, and ia had no problems..... the game was beautifully smooth...

Here is what I got from my scores on 3dmark Vantage:

3DMark Score
P11582 3DMarks

CPU Score
8618

Graphics Score
13081

Not sure how they compare to people with similar systems, Ill do some google research.

heya.

I can't run Vantage as no Vista. But with 3D Mark 2006 on XP:

Q6600 @ 3GHz
Asus P5K Prem
4GB RAM
8800GT

Overall 13,171
SM2 5,469
SM3 5,327
CPU 4,638

with new Asus 5850
Driver Sweeper + 10.2 Catalyst

Overall 15,756
SM2 5,981
SM3 7,559
CPU 4,528

Was kinda expecting a little more than that...

But still have 5 files Driver Sweeper can't seem to clear:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\nv4_disp.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\nv4_mini.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\nv4_disp.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\nv4_mini.sys
C:\WINDOWS\prefetch\NVUNINST.EXE-1B20CE53.pf

^I'm not sure what those numbers mean, which one is the GPU number Pailin? That is kind of odd that driver sweeper can clear those drivers, all mine were cleared without an issue.

I ordered my cpu cooler and it should be here early next week. If I am still having issues after I overclock my CPU to 3.2ghz than I am going to RMA it.

SM2.0 and SM3.0 are graphical shader model tests.

Most mainly look at the Overall - but the SM tests are well worth noting too..

Still tweaking my 5850's OC's, so far
906MHz @ 1.165vcore seems stable.

4800MHz memory seems fine for a while gaming in FarCry 2 then graphical corruption sets in (a set of small 3mm square spots (not solid) kinda like the nights stary sky dotted all over) leading to eventually a crash - so reckon the memory could do with some better cooling somehow which I will investigate maybe... but sounds a tough one to sort without a complete set of custom cooling.

for the moment am sticking to 4000 while I find my max GPU speed.

My earlier benchmarks are of course @ stock 5850 speeds.

By the 5th post there should have been a "Run this benchmarking tool" post.
By at least the 10th post there should have been a "What are your GPU's temps?" post if it proceeded.
Where in the hell are everyones brains?
No wait, fanboy land. Right. NM.

There's a power problem to the GPU - when it needs more to run with higher demands, it's not getting it. Hence the max fps regardless of settings. Check connections against install documents and make sure you did it right. If installed correctly (use 2 diff leads from power supply to 6 pin connector) that do not have anything else powered by them (not connected to say a drive and the 6 pin). These two power leads should only have the 6 pin connector adaptor pig tail connected to them and the 6 pin connector to the video card. Run your test again.... :)

The PCIe 1.0 slot would be the next thing to look at... make sure you have the updated bios for the motherboard and if the board requires additional power connectors that are not connected. As far as being slower, it's not by much... read http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/crossfire-meets-pci-express,1761-4.html

If all the power requirements have been met (Power supply is able to provide 75W to video card via 6 pin), then replace the video card.
