My alerts are now playing through my MB speaker instead of my desktop speakers.

Most notable when connecting to a server with mIRC. Alerts that would previously play through whatever audio device I had hooked up now play through the debug speaker.

Sorry this is kinda off topic but since he asked.

mIRC stands for multiuser internet relay chat and has pretty much been around longer than the common network known as the internet. It's what you used prior to chatrooms, if you wanted to be in a chatroom.

mIRC is an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) client for Windows, created in 1995 and developed by Khaled Mardam-Bey. Although it is a fully functional chat utility, its integrated scripting language makes it extensible and versatile.

I think the first thing I would try is going into device manager and right clicking on your sound device and selecting uninstall. Make sure that the uninstall the driver for this device option is checked as well in the confirm device uninstall window that pops up. Then reboot. At this point you can either reinstall your soundcard drivers from disc if you have them or go back into device manager and see if windows automatically reinstalled drivers. If not and there is a device showing an issue in device manager or showing as a generic device you have a couple of options. Either right click on the device and select update drivers and then update drivers automatically, or, browse to the manufacturer of you computers website and find the sound device drivers (Actually, you could do this prior to uninstalling so you will already have them.) and install those.

If you could post the brand, model and what is currently showing as your sound device I would be glad to find the most recent drivers available for it for you. If you're unsure about what sound device you have you can type msinfo32.exe in your search box on the start menu and run that which will bring up the system info. In the left pane click on components and then click on sound device. It should then list the information about your sound device in the right hand pane.

Sorry mate, don't know much from 3 years before I was born, but I do agree with sound driver uninstall. Maybe the OS preset certain sounds to go through speaker on Motherboard. An uninstall of drivers and a reinstall should work....

Sound device is listed as Realtek High Definition Audio.
MB is an Intel DG31PR.

If I let Windows install a driver the alerts play normally (but get no front panel audio), but if I install the latest (and the previous) drivers from Intel's website the MB speaker takes over for the alerts (and I get my front panel back).

Here is a link to the Realtek drivers. The top two are the most recent 32 and 64 bit drivers for your sound chipset. You can try whichever platform drivers you need according to whether you have 32 or 64 bit Windows. If your computer originally had XP there are also XP drivers further down. You'll have to agree to Realtek's terms of service then click ok and it will take you to the page.
