Discussion My attempt at a console replacement/killer

Sup community.
here's my attempt at a console killer/replacement at the end of 2019.

The general purpose and idea behind this is simple.
Must cost no more than $500 retail.
Must be wireless capable along with Bluetooth.
Must perform at least the same as current gen consoles at 4K (PS4 Pro and Xbox One X)
(I know this one is a little different because on console games are optimized to upscale, dynamically switch resolutions, and even checkerboard)

And naturally, you would connect this to an existing TV and you would use a controller (which a lot of people already have and just like a console)

I just wanted to share this and get some conversation going about different component choices and ways to go about building such a thing.

So feel free to leave your feedback and even your own builds.

Let's see if we can't get variants for other countries and their currency with same pricing to what a console costs in another country.
I live in the US so my build is US based.

Lastly, it would be important that if you were to build your own version, that you don't go pairing a newer gen CPU with an older gen board that doesn't ship with an updated BIOS since it would have to work out of the box and not need a BIOS update prior to putting in a CPU.

The builds don't need to include a Windows 10 license since not buying one doesn't stop you from being able to fully use the OS for gaming.
And removing the watermark is simple enough with free tools out there that remove the watermark but don't activate so you still can't use the personalization settings.

Anywho, here's what I've put together so far. Hope you like it :)

(P.S. - Due to the choices I had to make for the motherboard, I had to add a fan hub since this board only has one system fan header, but great thing is, with the header, once could spend whatever amount they wanted for up to three additional fans since the case supports it)

(oh, and I went with the cheapest wireless mouse/keyboard combo to stick with the living room wireless thing. Since gaming would be done with a controller the mouse and keyboard only needed to be there for setting things up and basic inputs)

Asrock B450M/AC has built in wifi/BT & supports 3rd gen, would go this route over the MAX board and adapter as it's cheaper (& I prefer Asrock over MSI).

As for the K/M the CM Devastator bundles are decent, I tried my friends out and it worked fine.

Nice. wasn't aware that anything other than the MAX was guaranteed to have an updated BIOS out of the box for third gen.

and while the keyboard and mouse are nice, they are overpriced for the intended purpose of such a build since you wouldn't be gaming with the keyboard and mouse with a build like this (I specified why in the post)

And overall, while those are good options for someone who wants a gaming PC to game with mouse and keyboard on for around the $500 budget, those two alternative options would completely defeat the entire purpose of such a build being $500 retail and no more to match consoles XD

But thanks for letting me know about the AsRock board.

I might have to look a little deeper into what other boards actually ship with updated BIOS now as alternatives to the MAX boards when putting together normal PC builds for others.

nevermind, I just realized that the AsRock has built in WiFi and Bluetooth, which removes the need for the PCIe adapter.

So it ends up costing a tad less now.

Micro ATX chassis. Board with networking. More GPU horsepower wont hurt at 4k and an RX570 for $99 is a steal.

oof. thermals are gonna be deadly in that case XD

Also, costs more than $500 and doesn't come with a mouse and keyboard.

But the graphics are sure gonna run better than the 3400G So I guess that's something. (y)

I know, it's not easy to build something that competes with a console with out of the box plug and play setup for a retail price of no more than $500

Following your example for trying to opt for a GPU, I came up with this.
The best I could personally do without sacrificing on case airflow and whatnot.

Well, the case has a rear exhaust at least.
I guess its just me that has a drawer with 4 mice and 2 keyboards.
LOL yah. My intended purpose of such a build is for someone to get a PC instead of buying a console for the same price.

So with that I have the assumption in my mind that such a person who buys such a thing doesn't have random PC components lying around and would need everything required to get started and wouldn't have to worry too much about something like thermals.

@QwerkyPengwen, if your near a Microcenter or Frys that has them in stock you may be able to find a 1600 for $80, this would allow for the K/M.

For $500 this would be the ideal console killer.

Here is an improved build plus mouse and keyboard included. This comes in under $500 with no rebates.

Case with more airflow and GPU thats cheaper without any rebates.

Only downside is the 8gb ram.

not looking for myself.
just bouncing ideas around with everyone coming up with what is essentially a console replacement/killer
(replacement when gaming at 4K and killer when gaming at 1080P)

more of a kind of post/thread that gives ideas to those who are looking for a more or less same price as console, but it's a PC that has a much larger library and of course does PC stuff sort of trade off.

And therefore with such a thing we can't be looking at in store deals with local places that don't exist everywhere for everyone.

Obviously someone can go out of their way to shop at a local store to find a discount but it's not as ease of use as just buying online and having things shipped.

oh yeah. I guess if we look strictly at console replacement then we can easily knock down the RAM to 8GB.
wired keyboard defeats the purpose of sitting on the couch like with a console, but yeah, if you do go wired like that, can get a mouse and keyboard for less.

that looks good.

Can't quite tell if it comes with more than the one fan at the back as exhaust though, but if it does come with one intake and one exhuast then that's pretty dope.

And it get's to have the better CPU.

what's insane is that we are building great machines that match and in some cases outperform a console at 4K gaming for the same price that can plug into your TV and you can game on in the living room with a controller.

and to think that if the budget was raised to $600 could slap it all into an SFF case with a better SFF PSU than the one's that come with them and it could literally replace a console O_O

But raising the budget by $100 ends up defeating the whole premise though XD

(to clarify, going the SFF route would require not getting a dedicated GPU and sticking with the 3400G)

In the event that you had seen my previous post, forget about it.
I have been dealing with some stuff today and was a little irritable.

Can you please build this in PCPP and share it.

Cannot include mail in rebates as those are not reflective of retail pricing.
Also needs to include bluetooth connectivity.

Also also, should be small enough to go with some kind of entertainment system in a living room or bedroom connected to a TV.

My build was mATX like the majority of others. So mITX is a requirement then? That invalidates just about every build listed so far.

Yes, my pricing includes MIRs when applicable since I haven't missed a single MIR to date. Wasn't aware that was a limitation. Even PCPP applies MIRs to their totals.

not what I was saying. was just making sure to keep the form factor as small as possible within the budget.

And all I am really asking is for you to build that PC with links to the parts and pricing.
Thank you :giggle:
