My Bluray player plays Blueray dvds and cds but not regular dvds?

So today I go in and play a regular DVD on my computer and it makes noise and runs but it just stops and nothing happens.

I have a bluray player and Bluray DVD's work and so do CDS. I also tried the DVD out on my xbox and it played fine. I have a Sony Vaio SVS13A290X and have Windows 8.1 installed. This DVD has worked on this laptop before.

I have tried uninstalling the drive and restarting my computer and troubleshooting it but nothing works. I also can't open and check the Drive components since it's just a slit on the side of my computer and I insert the disk in. I also downloaded the Windows 8 "Fix It" (CDDVDWin8.meta) and that didn't work either.

And ideas?

Which software are you trying to use to play the video? Try VLC Player.

Maybe there are some scratches on your dvd, try using new dvd

laptop drives are not that good compared to desktop drives or xbox
