My computer fell and it is now very slow

Hi,

I built my computer about a couple month ago. It just fall off because of a wrong movement and when I returned to see it all was laggy and I turn off and turn back on. But then, it was extremely slow. I heard that a hdd or ssd failure can be responsible because they can easily be affected by big shock. My windows and some apps and games are installed on my ssd and all the other stuff are on my hdd.

- It take about 3 to 4 more time to open it.
-Things such as loading the background image of the desktop takes times.
- Using chrome (on my ssd) is very slow, well every application is very slow (also on hdd)
- Also just accessing things in folder take times.
- But I didn't lost anything, like I can find every document or files.
- Loading image and text from website take a lot of time (But my connection speed is still normal)
- Every .exe and application are very slow
- Scrolling down on file in the folder app or in a website in chrome or explorer is laggy
- My computer still detect every part of my computer (correct number of gb of ram, correct graphic card, cpu, etc.)

I've tried to play a game to see if my graphic card was okay, well i don't know if it was affected, this is what I observed :
- Loading time take a lot lot of time
- Wifi is still okay
- The quality/texture is perfect but my fps have drop from 70 to like 10. I hope that my hdd or ssd is responsible of this and not a graphic card. I mean a lot other application that doesn't really require a graphic card is slow, and the image texture is still good.

Is it the ram? My HDD, SSD? My graphic card? Can I make some test to verify x parts to see what parts is the problem? Maybe some of you are pretty sure of what is affected?

you didnt open the case? sounds like you might have bumped a mem stick loose. reseat everything.

Considering all of the RAM is detected, this seems unlikely.

Chances are good that it's only one of the CPU heatsink clips has popped off so it's no longer making good contact. Intel chips keep running with no heatsink at all (!) but clock themselves down severely to prevent overheating--to as low as 200MHz.

Otherwise Seagate HDD are infamous for going bad by slowing down to USB 2.0 speeds while their SMART and test utility shows full health (probably to reduce RMAs). Nevertheless they are really good at RMAing a drive that passes all of their tests with flying colors if you describe the problem. Run a benchmarking utility on the HDD to see if it's still OK.

Perhaps it is time for a bench build/test process? Meaning, while keeping yourself electrostatically-grounded at all times, with the beep codes and normal noise list at hand, you "rebuild" and test beginning with just the motherboard, power supply, and monitor. Adding keyboard. Testing one RAM stick in all slots, if all slots work, adding one RAM stick at a time...and so on. This re-building / re-seating might be the best long-term solution. If all the hardware appears to check out ok, onto specific hardware tests. Testing the hard-drive(s) probably should follow the rebuild/reseat process.

I just went to sleep, and when i got back, the pc was at its normal speed.
I test my game, and normal fps count.

I think the cpu think you said is what happen. I think that it was already very very hot and it needed to cooldown. I've played game during 2-3 hour so it's possible. But now I'm scared that using thing that use my cpu may damage it (I do thing such as video editing, like premiere pro and after effects, that use it a lot)

When I touch the side of my case (directly open, without the protection, the other side of the motherboard where my cpu is) it's very hot, but I don't know if it's normal. I don't know if it's possible but I could check the temperature of my cpu while doing rendering, game or video editing to check if it's normal.

My cpu fan seem to have a bit of slack, maybe it's that but maybe it's my imagination because I think it was always a bit like that, the way the cpu fan intel provide me is.

Should I buy new thermal paste and maybe a better cpu fan, remove my fan and cpu and put it again? Or maybe it was just a moment all the lag and now it's ok? Or maybe it was nothing about the cpu but the hhd or ssd like repaired themself because they needed to reload the information? But i'm pretty sure it's about the heat and in this case the cpu thing you mentionned.

Get a software utility that will allow you to set the computer fan(s) to always spin at top speed -- that's what my desktop has been doing with no problem for a few years now.
