My computer is not reading my western digital 500gb external hard drive

MY COMPUTER IS NOT READING MY WD 500GB EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE. IT SAYS ITS NOT INITIALIZED......... I CANT USE IT

As long as Windows can see the drive this should work...
- right click on My Computer
- left click Manage
- left Disk Management
- right click on the icon of the hd
- left click on Initialize

I have the same problem with my western digital External drive. DRive shows up in device manager but the drive doesnt show up in my computer. When i try to initialize disk in disk management i get the error msg "Incorrect function"

Any ideas?
