I have a Gateway LX6810-01. (It might be helpful to google a picture of this computer's insides.)
I have replaced the video card with an AMD Radeon HD 7700.
I have replaced the power supply with an OCZ model: OCZ600SXS ( with inside fan, blows into tower)
This computer is known for overheating. The latest bios update was about 4 years ago, and addressed the overheating by forcing the over-sized CPU fan on full speed all the time. It was very loud and obnoxious.
I replaced the CPU fan with a Corsair Liquid Cooler - H60. I placed the radiator on the rear fan mount. This left some kind of void because instantly the computer would shut off within 15-20 minutes because the chipset was getting way too hot.
I replaced the standard aluminum chip-set heat-sink with Deep Cool CC2 NBRIDGE 2 Northbridge Chipset Cooler and also added a front intake fan. This has worked for a while, but since the weather has started to warm up, and since we do not have central AC, eventually the computer overheats (especially gaming) and shuts down.
In addition, since Sunday, Windows 8.1 Update 1 has started reporting WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR 0x8, this after I added the Logitech MK550 Keyboard and Mouse. Would this be the cause, or just coincidental since the weather was also warming up?
Now I am considering my next move.
Questions for the community:
1. Is this north-bridge cooler inadequate? What do you recommend as a replacement? This one adds 2 more CFM of airflow over the Deep Cool: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Titan-TTC-CSC31TZ-Northbridge-Chipset-Cooler-EC-TTC-CSC31TZ-Iron-Heart-/321162925585
Or this one with a radiator, but only 4 CFM airflow: http://www.xoxide.com/cooljag-falcon-minichipcooler.html
2. Is the tower not getting enough cold air circulation? What if I added a PCI mounted fan like this one? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?gclid=CPH8jo3Pnb4CFaY-Mgod3k8Aog&Item=N82E16835192026&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleAdwords&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-_-pla-_-VGA+Cooling-_-N82E16835192026&ef_id=U2ZMiQAABHZtXBgm:20140509004736:s
Or possibly this one with an outside vent: http://www.dx.com/p/evercool-sb-f1-pci-slot-system-bearing-blower-fan-black-red-silver-dc-12v-228580?tc=USD&gclid=CPvK0p_Unb4CFcpcMgodBUEAMA#.U2wq6PldWSo
3. Do I just scrap this computer case all together and buy a new one with better air circulation?
Thanks,
Scott
