My computer refuses to recognize my AMD GPU and instead uses integrated graphics

My GPU doesn't even show up under display adapters in device manager. I'm using an xfx radeon r9 280x GPU with a z79x sli mobo and i5 4570 cpu. I have no idea what to do. I've installed my mobo drivers and TRIED to install my GPU drivers, but I can't use the disc since my computer won't detect the GPU, and when I try to download the drivers I get an error during installation that says "Application installation: install package failure!" With no context. When I try to use their Driver Autodetect, I get the message "We are unable to find your product or OS." I've reinstalled the GPU hardware multiple times; it is firmly plugged in, and the fans are spinning. I've had to plug my dvi cable into the motherboard because when I plug it into the GPU there is no display on the monitor.
Can someone please help me with my problem?

Please give us the exact motherboard model. Usually, in BIOS you must select PCI-E graphics instead of AUTO in the Graphics setting tab (also, you can select the PCI-E x16 slot you will use). After changing the setting, save, reboot and attach the monitor cable to the 280x.

It is a GA-Z97X-SLI motherboard. I remember when looking at a section of the BIOS which is I think the one you describe there were 4 options, Auto and then 3 others numbered "something" 1, 2, and 3. Which one should I pick?

Edit: I just looked in my BIOS. There is a section called miscellaneous, in it PCIe slot Configuration. I can pick Auto, Gen1, Gen2, or Gen3. I've tested them all, but even with every single option my computer still only shows a display when I plug the DVI cable into the motherboard itself, not the GPU.

Thanks for your help. I will try this in about 7 hours when school let's out; I'll come back to this thread with the results

So I did all that, and so I lost display from the mobo. I plugged the dvi cable into the GPU instead, and still...
no signal.
I had to restart the BIOS by removing the battery for 30 seconds and putting it back in so I could actually see a display again.
What else should I do?
