First time building a pc and I have run into a problem I am not sure how to diagnose.

Specs
gigabyte aorus elite ax mATX
ryzen 7800X3D
ASUS TUF 6900XT
Samsung 990 Pro 1TB M.2
G.skill trident Z5 NEO RGB 64GB
case Phanteks Eclipse G500A

When I first went to power it up, I saw a brief flash of red then nothing. Upon some googling I decided to try doing a flash BIOS update. The latest version powered up the ram lights and some other red lights on the motherboard, but no display. Tried an earlier version (F8) and after a while the BIOS displayed. The power button now seemed to restart the computer, but doesn't turn it off. I do a save and exit on the bios and flick the power brick switch off and try to power it on. Nothing.

Next I try to get it turning on properly by reassembling it a few times, checking connections and a CMOS reset. Still the same behaviour.

A bit stuck I decide to just go for a windows install using the flash bios to turn it on. This works. Windows installs and I do a bunch a driver updates and restart it a few times. It all seems to work fine, all the components are showing up nothing seems amiss. The power button still restarts the computer and doesnt turn it off. I tried holding and double clicking but it just restarts the pc each time. I do a windows shutdown hoping i can turn it back on and unsurprisingly the power button does nothing again and I am stuck unable to turn on the pc.

The catch is that I can turn on the pc using the BIOS flash method and after about 5mins of waiting I can use windows just fine. My guess at this stage is that CMOS battery is faulty. I do not think the power button should behave the way it does when the pc is running though. I also am too new to this to be confident in my diagnostic.

Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you have the power and reset button wiring crossed from case to motherboard.
Well that led me to the solution thank you! Turns out the button that has the power symbol on it is the reset button, and there is another button on the case...

Not sure to feel annoyed am my stupidity or relieved it all works.
