As you all may know, I'll be buildin a new gaming rig system soon. Now my main concern is futureproof. We all know that the Penryns will be out soon. As it stands, all 680is can support C2D but not Quad. My question is simple:

Do I get a 680i LT mb or hold out for a 7xx?

I know I've asked this before but remember: I will prob upgrade to Nehalem when it comes out, so should I shell out the extra cash for a board that don't support it when I plan to upgrade in like 2 years? Or grab the board thats on sell.. and SHOULD last me until Nehalem?

I appreciate the support.

Man I'm in your shoes and really frustrated. I've spent 10 days without a computer holding back just trying to nail it and get a system that would make me satisfied. I started with the "shell out the extra cash" strategy, but then I realized I really don't want to go through this anytime soon and rather get a mobo that would last me 3+ years and during these years I'd just upgrade the processors and GPUs to get extra power.

Hold off, if you can. The 680i might be well priced where you are, but you seem to be after a quad, so best to wait.

Conversely, if quad core was not on your radar, I'd go 680i and Core 2 Duo, but that's what I already run, so I'm biased.

The perfect way to go is a Q6600 processer OC to 3.2-3.6GHz, 680i or 780i until Nehalem comes out. This way you don't have to suffer DDR3 prices which I must say is unbelievable. You don't believe a 45nm processer is going to give you that magical FPS boost do you?

The 6xx don't support penryn quads, they never will from what I've read. It's due to lack of physical circuity missing. However they can support Penryn C2Ds.

And I thought I hade clarified. I would prob be going with a C2D.

edit:
If I was go to with an XFX 680i LT with a E6750 and add a 8800GT, do you all think I can play games at good settings until the release of Nehalem and then upgrading?

Yes the 8800GT/GTS is pretty close to the 8800GTX performance wise, so your good to go. Maybe later you can add another 8800GT.

Since I didn't see it spelled out, here it is:

680i will support the current quad core C2Qs (Kentsfield) Q6xxx
680i will support the Penryn dual cores E8xxx
680i will NOT support the Penryn quad cores Q9xxx

If you want a quad core CPU now, the current C2Qs will work. If you want a Penryn quad then you will have to forgo
SLI support or wait until (hopefully) a new chipset is released that supports both.

I went ahead and bought the Q6600 G0 since I have a 650i motherboard (the choice was not mine, the board was given to me by a friend).
