I was running memtest86+ to check why I only got 3.19GB of memory available when my computer is detecting 8GB RAM installed (dual kit corsair cmz8gx3m2a1600c9b) on my ASUS P8Z77-V LX2 motherboard (both sticks occupy the blue slots, not the black ones). When running the test, the memtest86+ reads core temp up to 97 celcius. Is this normal. I think this number is quite scary. My CPU is i3 3240 3.4GHz by the way. Thanks

False reading? I doubt memtest could possibly drive the CPU that high on its own, where Windows couldn't. What do the temps read inside Windows or the BIOS?

Also, the amount of RAM detected as Available by Windows:

That 3.19GB figure is just the amount that currently isn't being used by the system. Which implies that just under 5GB is being used by other programs. Windows is REALLY aggressive allocating RAM these days.

How can I tell what the temps read is by Windows or BIOS? because the memtest is run as bootable USB, so memtest run outside of windows and BIOS. I tried in several other computers, and they only display "Installed memory 8GB", without the xxxGB usable like mine. You can see this stat in Start -> Right click on "Computer" --> Properties under the "System" section.
thanks

what are your idle temps"? Also he means restart computer, enter your BIOS.. and find your CPU Info and the temp should be there... it could be a false reading from bad temp sensors.. Also check and see what your System shutdown Temp is in BIOS as well... usually its anywhere from 70-90 C.. Im not even too sure if it goes as high as 90 C.. but possibly.. if it IS NOT ON.. turn it on the the lowest shutdown degree possible... save.. restart...; run memtest again.. If your computer shuts down once hitting the chosen shutdown temp.. then you probably have an issue.. if not then its false readings

I downloaded coretemp, and the temp for both cores are in range of 54-65 celcius. but I did hear the cpu fan getting faster when running memtest. can I absolutely take that as false reading by memtest86+? thanks

I'm using stock cooler and that's it. How do I diagnose if something's wrong? how do I find the root cause? thanks

which heatsink are you talking about? the stock cooler or the motherboard heatsink? or is there any other kind of heatsink I'm not aware of? thanks

so, is this temp normal? according to AI Suite II, my CPU temp would reach 65 during heavy load. Today, I downloaded some movie (and some browsing) and the temp went between 48-50 celcius (according to AI Suite II). thanks

okay, so something really weird just happened. The only change I did to my rig is that I powered up the 8cm back fan (built in to the casing) and installed 64-bit version of windows 7 instead of 32-bit version that I used when the above readings were taken. As you can see in the previous readings, the average temp was 46-50 celcius. now it's dropped significantly to 34-37 celcius. very weird indeed. even coretemp is showing the same figures as AI Suite II.
