On the box of my CPU it says to update the BIOS before installing the CPU. I don't understand how I'm meant to update the BIOS if I'm building a computer? Do I really need to update it before CPU installation?

You can't update the BIOS without installing a CPU, memory, etc. You need to update the BIOS only if you bought a CPU that isn't yet supported by the motherboard and we don't know if it's the case as you didn't provide any info about your components.

My motherboard is an AM3+ Asus M5 and my CPU is an AMD FX 4 core @ 3.6GHz

Try it and you'll know if the BIOS supports it or not. If the motherboard is new, then it should support it; Asus had several months to add BD support in the BIOS. On the other hand, AMD write that on the box because not all motherboards will support it without a BIOS update.
