My CPU hits 90 Celsius while Bitcoin Mining... is this ok?

I have just recently gotten into Bitcoin mining and am using Nice hash miner. I just came back from a 3 day trip, and left my PC on while I was gone. When I got back I saw the CPU peeked at 91 Degrees and sometimes got to 83-87 Degrees while mining. I wanted to know if this is normal, and if I should be worried. If so, how I could try to lower the temperature on my processor, is there a way to limit it with out me needing to do it manually and without interupting the mining? My GPU stays at a normal temperature.

My Current Setup:
CPU-i7-7700K
GPU-Nvidia GTX 1060 ROG STRIX 6GB
Motherboard- ASUS Z170 PRO GAMING
CPU Cooler- Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO

Thanks

go to the last post in this thread http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-3627836/delidding-questions-doubts.html#20645890 - it will help calm any worries you might have re permanent damage to your CPU. There's also a good deal of info in that thread posted by Computronix re temps.

you haven't stated if you're overclocking your CPU

but no, you don't want to make a habit of those temps, especially 24/7. You might want to consider delidding, or sending your cpu out to be delidded - siliconelottery.com will do it for not much more than you'd pay for the tool to delid the cpu, and do it professionally.

you might also consider upgrading your cooler to a Noctua NH-D15 (165mm tall) or a NH-D15S (160mm tall) depending on the head room in...

I did not overclock my CPU. Strangley enough, when i first opened the CPU box, it already had a hole in it, and didn't come with the intel stock cooler. I will probably upgrade the cooler and I will see about it getting delidded. Also, I notice that the CPU stays at around 60-70 Degrees, than out of nowhere, jumps to 85-91 degrees.

thanks

that 7700k does run hot, and all CPUs, the core temps will jump in a nanosecond depending on the load hitting them, and then drop back down in the same nanosecond once the load has diminished

there are other coolers that will perform similiar to or close to the noctua units i mentioned above, and noctua is definitely not the cheapest cooler, but if you google for "cpu cooler comparison" the NH-D15 is always within 1 or 2 degrees C of even the premium water coolers.

Given that fact and the fact that i'm adverse to putting water in an electronical environment, with the risk to awfully expensive components, the noise of the water pump, complexity with the accompanying higher level of failure risk, the simplicity of an air cooler is just more appealing to me. And considering you'll be running that rig 24/7 at pretty heavy loads, reliability of the cooling system should be an area of strong interest.

be sure to check the headroom or height of your case and the height of whatever cooler you go with, to make sure it'll fit

and while you didn't ask about this, i'll suggest you run a decent sinewave or PFC UPS, like a CyberPower UPS
