My computer is using 100% of my CPU all the time. It has just over 110 active items at startup and shows 40plus svchost entries while I just have Chrome and Process Explorer running. I ran an A/V check yesterday; but it did not show anything. Also have run Malwarebytes, that showed 11 PUP entries.
Application Host Service entry shows 50% usage and System shows 39% (both +/- 7 percent.
Please help. I am a 72 year-old bedbound
cripple and my compter is my life

Usually, background processes are to blame for high CPU usage when you're doing nothing. Essentially, some programs will run at all times without you knowing, and they'll gladly hog your computer's resources. It sucks, but it's usually the issue with slow computers.

Unfortunately, any number of programs or processes can be to blame here. Here's some stuff you can check in your case:

1. PUPs. As Kaptain said, these are potentially unwanted programs. Usually there's a reason they're unwanted. Use Malwarebytes to delete them as you would a normal virus, then check your programs and uninstall them.

2. While you're at it, uninstall any programs you don't need or don't use...
svchost is nothing to really worry about. Microsoft says it's a generic name for some services running in the background.

As for the startup items, you can disable nonessential stuff. If you can post a screenshot of some of the items on there, we can help point out what stuff is nonessential.

As for the Malwarebytes scan, PUP stands for Potentially Unwanted Program. They're not necessarily bad, but it's safe to let Malwarebytes deal with it.

In task manager, sort the active list on cpu usage and research the most active tasks.
Google can help identify what they are.

Is the usage impacting what you do?
Possibly what you are seeing is the indexing service making searching faster.
That operates at low priority and should not impact anything.

What are the specs of your pc?

running 100% all the time is not normal, but, do allow for occasional flurries of activity that occur the immediately near the 2nd TUesday of each month, as Microsft cranks out it's WIndows updates...

(In command line, type 'updates', select it, and see if any updates are being downloaded/installed, which might legitimately spike your CPU usage for several hours, depending on your specs/internet connection, etc.....)

3. What version of Windows are you using? Vista, 7, 8, 10? Sometimes, Windows itself decides to bite you in the butt and steals your CPU for its own use. Some versions of Windows have known CPU-hoggers, and I can walk you through getting rid of them.

I hope this helps! I'll be in touch, so if none of this works, be sure to let me know. Good luck!!

Solution
if you open task manager, and click on "CPU" once or twice, it will toggle from list the
in ascending/descending order , allowing you to see processes are consuming all your CPU usage...

But , again, let's make sure we are just not in the middle of a some 4 GB Windows 10 Creator's Update download, etc....

CPU 100% happens with me when I use 2 browsers with heavy browsing and (several different extensions) installed. If you frequently uses browsers than clear your browsing history and remove unwanted extensions. It might help you a little. Other than that open RUN > msconfig > Startup, then remove any unwanted start up programs.

Get the 32 bit or 64 bit version, as appropriate (if you don't know, choose 32 bit), the portable version is fine, download it, run the scan, and it will identify any processes it finds 'suspicious'. Let it delete what it finds in the scan afterward....

Note: the scan does take a while (45 minutes on my laptop, and 15 minutes even on a snappy 7700k with fast storage!) as it sorts thru all processes, services, and registry entries, so be patient!
