Question My CPU wants way too much voltage *Ryzen 5 2600*

I have a Gigabyte Aorus B450 pro with a ryzen 5 2600. I saw vids of people overclocking it to 4.2ghz with proper cooling around 1.42 volts. On my mobo, you can't change the CPU voltage, only the offset so I put it to +0.252 and overclocked to 4.1ghz, I got around 70 degrees Celsius under load but when I put the settings to high in battlefield 1 it crashed the pc, I looked at my voltages and they go up to 1.4..how is that not enough for 4.1ghz? I need advice here, should I keep it at a stable 4.0 or is there a solution to this? Thanks in advance

Every chip is different, some overclock more with less voltage, I had an FX 8350 that was supposed to overclock to 5.1GHz no problem with 1.5V, I couldn't get over 4.7GHz at that voltage.

I'd say 4.0GHz is really good for an all core overclock with that motherboard and CPU.

I wouldn't go higher than 1.35-1.4V myself.

I'd say 4.0GHz is really good for an all core overclock with that motherboard and CPU.

I got it to work with a bit more voltage with Battlefield 1 on high but idle temps were over 50 degrees Celsius so I went back to 4ghz where the idle temp is normal around 40. In all honesty I don't even need the 4.1GHz as I'm getting a gtx 1070 and that can run most games well over 60fps ultra at stock 3.8ghz so I'll keep this a small overclock.

Yeah I wouldn't either but the voltage jumps around, I had it at +0.278 or something and it went from 1.38 to 1.4 on idle and it was same under load lol. No thanks 😂.

I have a r5 2600 on a b450 aorus Pro with a Arctic freezer 34,which is more than enough for a nice 1.425v 4.2ghz overclock, I saw many people even achieved 4.1 at 1.31 ,yet I cannot achieve even 4ghz at 1.38 volts! Would this be a case of mobo or CPU? I tried OCing using Aorus easy tune, BIOS and amd ryzen master.

It sounds like you got unlucky in the Silicone Lottery.
OR you are using the wrong BIOS version for that CPU.
The BIOS versions with AGESA 1.0.0.6 work best with the 2000 series CPUs.
The newer BIOS versions (with newer AGESA versions) are optimized for the 3000 series CPUs and do Not work as well with the 2000 series CPUs.
BIOS F5 looks to be the Best BIOS version for your motherboard and Ryzen 5 2600 CPU.

I ran my 2600 ran at 4 GHz (all core OC via BIOS settings) at 1.35v using BIOS 1201 (AGESA 1.0.0.6 on my Asus ROG Strix B450-F.
I had it at 4 GHz at 1.32v but it wasn't 100% stable.
At 1.35v it was 100% stable and ran very cool (idled at 28-30c and maxed out around 55-56c) and I got my 3200 RAM to run at 3400 Mhz with tighter timings.
I got it to 4.1 GHz and even 4.125 GHz but those required more voltage than I wanted to use for 24/7 operation.

I would suggest you have bad silicon.

My 1200 won't break over 3.8ghz regardless of voltage and yet some 1200s get to like 4.1ghz.

Have you tried voltage offset and load line calibration.
I got my 2600x on asus rog strix x470 f gaming bios 5204 stable at 4.1ghz @1.35625v
LLC 3
And Soc LLC 3 and soc voltage @ 1.06250

I am using the f32 bios, but overclocking using the Aorus easy tune app meaning I can overclock without having to reboot, if it is that bad silicone, should I return it? Has 3 years of warranty on it. I will try bios f5 first though, thanks

See, voltage offset is how I change my CPU voltage, there's no way I can actually change the voltage on this board, it doesn't have that feature 🤦 llc is a thing it doesn't have either as I have looked and looked for it everywhere and can't find it.

Having a CPU that cannot overclock far is not covered under warranty.

The CPU is guarenteed to run at stock clocks. Overclocking is not guarenteed.

Seems as if I'm having a problem downgrading my bios, I downloaded f5 and got. It onto my USB (I've tried it extracted and unextracted) I did the bios uefi boot thing and it seemed to reset the pc anol. But it didn't change the bios, it's still on f32, there's literally no tutorial showing you how to do it either which makes it better... The way I updated to f32 in the first place was through @bios I believe or I simply installed it and ran the bios thing, this time it didn't work.

Ok so F5 didn't make a difference, 4ghz ran gta for 1 hour then gave up when I was transporting mates 81k worth of cargo so that was fantastic timing, it ran 65 to 68 degrees which is too much for my liking.. UOTE="DMAN999, post: 21320749, member: 2739378"]

Try to OC at 3.975 GHz.
That .25 GHz won't affect performance enough to really notice except maybe in Bench tests.
Even at 3.975 GHz, your 2600 will be running very close to 2600x performance levels.

I have a gigabyte d3h 350 and 2600 and have to overclock using offset mode like you. I have my offset at +0.180v for the cpu and +0.012v for the cpu soc. This is enough for 39.0x multiplier. Higher than 1.35v causes my cpu to overheat and shutdown during stress tests, but I'm on the stock cooler.
If I were you I'd start at 1.35v and 39.0x multi and tune from there, starting at 1.4v+ is just too much unless you have special cooling.
