my dell OptiPlex 390 wont turn on, I upgraded the psu to a evga 500w, it worked for the first day and since then it wont turn on. when I open the case all I see is an orange led light at the buttom right of the motherboard. what can I do?

Solution

The solid amber light on the board is normal. Just a power-on indicator. I'd check the connections at the 24-pin and 4-pin headers to be sure they are fully seated
You might try disconnecting the new PSU and connecting back up the old one just to see what's up. You don't have to swap PSUs if you can get the old one close to the case.

Was there any odd-ball proprietary cables coming out of the old Dell PSU that needed to be connected... that the retail PSU...

I bought the 390 MT off ebay, when I called dell, they said that the dell was about 7 years old and the 500w is new

I tried that putting the old psu and it was working but the evga 500w was not. the evga 500w has odd-ball proprietary cables which cannot be connected to the OptiPlex 390

What do you mean can't be connected? You have the 390 MT, right? What 500W Evga PSU do you have? There should be no difference between the Dell PSU's connectors and the Evga. And the Evga has identical connectors to other retail PSUs. Here is a video showing the Dell PSU being swapped with a typical retail PSU.

yes I have the 500w white and after I connect all the cables, there is one more which is not connected, I think its for the fan.

The Evga 500W White has no fan cable. It has an old fashioned floppy drive connector, but that isn't needed.
You should only need to connect the 4-pin CPU power, the 24-pin motherboard power, and any drives you have to either the SATA power or Molex power cables.

is it possible for you to assist me through a video call, I did not mention im a first time builder.
