hi, my disk usage has been staying at 100% lately and no matter what i do, it wont drop. ive disabled superfetch, ive disabled windows search, i purchased a new hdd, nothing seems to work. im running windows 10 os and i cannot solve the problem. could it be a mobo issue? any suggestions?

Solution
there was a recent windows 10 update that caused this issue for many. check this out and see if that helps. worked for multiple pc's that came to my shop with this sudden problem. also look at windows defender. that one tends to cause the hdd to run maxed out as well for long periods especially after start-up. i disable that right away and it drops a lot of the problem as well. finally, in the settings app, look at advanced update options and turn off the ability for your pc to act as a server for updates to other pc's. your pc sending out updates to whomever in the world can also cause undue hdd usage.

hope some of these are useful, but likely it is...
Hi there John_445,

That is really unpleasant. 🙁

I believe it would be nice to start with something simple as just attaching the drive with different SATA and especially power cables, to a different SATA port. That way, you will see if this is connection related.

If the issue persists, then most probably, this is related to your OS. Unfortunately, there are many possible causes and solutions. You need to go through threads on the topic, which you can find in this community.

Here's an example of one: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/faq/id-3267507/fix-100-disc-usage-system-service.html

It's probably a rampant windows page file from something that's eating memory faster than cookie monster goes through that plate. Does this still happen when booted into safe mode? Do you have antivirus/security software running in tandem with each other and Windows Defender? Is your computer attempting to optimize/defrag your HDD based on a scheduled task? Is it attempting to do all of its Windows Updates you've been trying to skip?

There are a lot of things that would pin your disk usage at 100%, and they are all software-based, and mostly OS-based. When a motherboard goes bad, it's a very different list of symptoms.

I uninstalled windows and reinstalled it. ive also changed both the sata wire and sata port. i just am completely clueless as to what it could be at this point. i think my next move is a new mobo 🙁

Well, I don't really think it's MOBO related.
Try to boot in safe mode. If this sorts the issue out, then your OS services are causing this. You just need to do some research on that and figure out what is causing it.

Also, it would not hurt to check the drive's health status out. You can test it with a tool that can provide SMART data.

im not sure what it could be out of those. all i can tell you is ive tried to disable superfetch and windows search, ive completely uninstalled and reinstalled windows, ive switched hdd, ive done a million disk cleans and i just cant figure out how to stop it!
