So I had my WD passport external hard drive less than a year and its still working like a charm but when I plug it into my usb 3.0 mobo port it isn't recognizing it at all. My drivers are all up to date and my transfer speed drops to 0 in 5 seconds when I'm transferring data from my ssd to my external drive. Also if I plug it into the front case usb 3.0 port it works. What's going on,can someone help me on this?

You observe the issue on both back and front USB 3.0 ports? Did I get that right?

Have you tested the drive? Is it in a healthy state?

If you think that something is accessing the drive, you can see if this is the case. Some third party tools that can show you what is accessing the drive.

Are you trying to transfer many small files or just a single, big file?

Issue also when I start up my computer and it gets to the desktop it makes a sound when a usb drive is connected and then disconnects but everything works fine.

Hi there Cuso,

That is really unpleasant. :(
Is the HDD even powering up, when attached to the ports on the back? Do you have one of those Y type of USB cables?

I don't really think that this is a driver issue, as the ports on the front are working. So, it's more likely to be an issue related to your MOBO. Yet, it will not hurt to go to your MOBO's website and update the USB 3.0 drivers.

When is the transfer speed dropping? (when the drive is attached to the front?) I believe it may be a good idea to back up the data stored on the drive. After that, you can test the drive with WD's DLG tool (both short and extended tests): http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=WE4FNc

Let me know how this goes,
D_Know_WD :)

I tried updating the drivers for my mobo but it still isn't connecting its on and running though. When my transfer rate drops is at 5 to 10 seconds of the 15 to 30mb or something like that then drops to 0 right away on the front usb 3.0. Something I think might be interfering with the transfering but I can be wrong.
