Solution
The first thing to try is to take the drive out of its enclosure and put it into a desktop and see if the BIOS can detect it. If it can't, the controller is likely dead. A PCB swap with the same type of drive MIGHT work to recover your data, but it's complicated and more likely to damage than to help.
If it is detected, see if the OS can see the drive. If you can see the data on the drive, that means your enclosure is dead. (That's your best case scenario)
If it's detected in BIOS but not the OS, or even worse detected as unformatted, there's more recovery methods available.

Welcome to the community, Javalina!

I'm sorry to hear about your issues with the WD Elements desktop drive. 🙁 I'd suggest you check the warranty on the external first, otherwise, taking it out of the enclosure would void the warranty.
Once you do that, check how the WD Elements will get detected if you connect it to another system. Hopefully, it will allow you to access the contents long enough for you to back them up. Unfortunately, those noises could be indicating internal hardware failure on the HDD, which would make the data recovery even harder. I'd strongly recommend you consider contacting a professional data recovery company as they are you best bet on getting your family photos back. Any data retrieving attempts by yourself are rather risky.

I'd also suggest you run the QUICK and EXTENDED tests from WD's Data LifeGuard Diagnostics for Windows. The utility will help us determine the health and SMART status of the external hard drive.

Keep us posted with the troubleshooting!
