My First Army

If Army Builder is working correctly, it seems to be a legal Army, as
it stands the only Model I have is the Inquisitor Lord on Throne of
Judgement.

I played a few small games with Space Marines last weekend to get the
rule basics, so I have more an idea what everyone would be talking
about.

Thanks for your help and advice.

I do want to try the priest units, I have always been a fan of the
underdog, and it seems people dont like using priests or priest units
because they seem to get killed early, or kill themselves (Arco's) so
I decided to give them a shot.

But other than him not being right, does it look like a viable army?

Too many points wrapped up in one model. You need bodies, preferably bodies
with flamers in a Witch Hunters force.

weird. Link works for me.

Can I edit my subject or am I better off making a new post?

Beats me, man, the link is busted. Why not use Army Builder's "Save as Text
Summary" feature and post the text version of your list here? Also, a lot
of people on RGMW use filters to determine which messages they download; if
you put a [40k] tag in your subject line, the number of people who'll see
your list will increase dramatically. The newsgroup FAQ is located here:

http://www.rgmw.org

and it has all the details you'll need on how to tag your posts. Hope that
helps.

Ok, I see where it is now. I had to cut&paste it to get it to work
properly - there was a stray bracket in the original that made OE try to
parse the URL and the first half of your description for it as one big,
non-working link. If anyone else is having problems with it, the clean URL
is:

http://www.tucko.com/WH.htm

I'm still pretty new to actually PLAYING 40k (as opposed to just buying the
models and gluing them together), so I'm not sure how much use my critique
might be, but I'll take a stab at it. I will say that on first looks, it
seems troop-poor for a 1500 point list. Basic Sisters have BS 4, 3+ armor,
and bolters for 11 points. That's a pretty good deal, and it seems to me
like you should take more advantage of that. If you lose just the 4
Arco-Flagellants and their Priest, you can fit an entire 3rd Troops
selection and a Rhino for them in there; much less the Penitent Engine or
Lord Karamazov. Other people here may disagree; chances are they're much
better at this than I am, so don't put too much weight on my analysis.

> Can I edit my subject or am I better off making a new post?

Well, from what I understand, if you change the sub line some newsreaders
will automatically display it as a new thread, others will leave it in this
thread, and lord only knows what Google will do with it. I'd just throw a
[40k] in there and let the chips fall where they may.

Hope that helps,

I can't imagine why you bought that model, as I find it abominably ugly.

Anyhow, your army is fine for a "one of each" army. It's the very sort
of thing that GW uses in their Studio, as it maximizes their ability to
showcase the variety of models available.

The good thing is that you have answers to nearly any problem. The bad
thing is that you only have one or two answers to a particular problem,
and in some cases, that won't be enough.

Your army will be challenging to play, but you should be able to have a
lot of fun with it.

One of each Heavy is fine, tho I think 2 Penitent Engines would be
enough, given that you've also got arco-Flagellants.

You'd do better if you dumped the Immolator for a 2nd Exorcist. You
already have an twin Heavy Flamer Immolator with the Dominions, and you
can use the additional ranged fire support; worst case, give it twin
Heavy Bolters.

The Seraphim seem a bit small. I'd want a 2nd Serpahim squad, with
Veteran, and both with Power Weapons, possibly Eviscerators.

The Dominion squad is fine, tho I'd have taken with 3 Meltas, as the
Immolator itself carries Twin Heavy Flamers. I'm not sure about the
Veteran over a 4th Melta.

You only have 2 squads of Battle Sisters, which is a bit light for
Troops. I'd give both squads Heavy Flamer and Melta. I'd strongly
consider trying to find the points for a 3rd squad of Sisters.

The Arco-Flagellants are efficient for their points, but small for a
non-scoring slow HtH unit. Personally, I'd drop them for the 2nd
Seraphim squad.

Ideally, you save Karamazov for 1850 pt games, trading him for the 3rd
squad of Sisters and a Heroine.

So I'd have:

HQ: Heroine & Priest.
Troops: 3x 10 Sisters.
Fast: 6 Dominions & 2x 5 Seraphim.
Heavy: 2 Penitent Engines & 2x Exorcists.

extra: Karamazov.

Sisters are comparable in efficiency to Marines. They are *excellent*
to build an army around.

I made this same recommendation. However, the Penitent Engines are kind
of cool. They, along with Karamazov, the Priest, and the Arcos are a
good choice to save for 1850 pt games.

Google will do the right thing.

Give the priest Power Armor. That helps their survivability, esp. since
they have 2 wounds.

At a quick glance, my advice would be this:

Get rid of the Immolator in Heavy Support (keep the ones the Dominions
are riding) and the Arco Flagellants (you have plenty of shreddy combat
power with your squad of three Penitent Engines, more than enough for a
1500 point army). Instead, boost your Seraphim to a full 10 woman
squad, arm them well, and get more troops in your army. Mount some
troops in a rhino if possible.

Drop the flamers out of your Dominion squad and give them meltaguns,
storm bolters, or just let them keep their bolters. They're better used
for longer-range fire and for tank-killers (with their meltabombs and
their meltaguns), and flamers are pointless for both.

Arm any and all veterans where you can w/ Power Weapons, esp. your
Seraphim Superior. All of your sister superiors should be veterans.

As for Karamazov--I say keep him. Why? Because IIRC you said in another
post that you really liked the model and wanted to build your army
around him, and had already bought and painted him. If he's what made
you want to build a Witch Hunters army, then by golly put him in that
there Witch Hunters army! I'm sure many folks here will think I'm a sad
freak for thinking so, I personally think armies should be as much fun
and suited to personal taste as they are for strategic build. And you
_can_ make him work--you just need to adjust around him appropriately.
Since Karamazov _is_ a lot of points in one place, it's why you do need
to bulk up your army with more troops--to draw fire and give your
opponent more than just one obvious target.

Thanks...and OMG. I didnt realize I had 2 Immolators in the army! Only
wanted one.

That is going to really change things. Figures I need to learn how Army
Builder puts things together. I thought I had to have the Vehicle in
the Army before attaching them to a squad.

I appreciate all the help. It is going to take me 8 months to build my
Army. Since we're expecting and just bought a house I can only allot
enough cash for about 50 bucks a month on Mini's.

In some respects, it's one of the better ways to build an army, as it
does make you think about what you really want to buy. I actually built
my Tau army in a very similar way to the Tale of Four Gamers
series, adding a unit or vehicle to it every month or so.

I thought about submitting it as a retrospective entry to the Tale of RGMW
Gamers threads, but there are several Tau armies there already.

It's now standing at 2000-ish points, and I've already planned my next
purchase - a third Devilfish, since I feel the biggest weakness my army
has is a lack of mobility.
