hello fellow denizens,

This is my first build and i referenced a friend's list for his recent purchase and tried to inform myself for what kind of components i will need. I'm going to be mostly playing online poker (multitabling)/music recording in Ableton/screen sharing + video calling on Discord and Skype/some other games. I had another friend look at my newegg cart and he suggested getting an extra fan for the back since I have 3 fans in the case that are blowing in one direction. He also noted that my PSU is probably too much for what I need. I tried using a power wattage calculator online with the specs that I had in my list but I guess i may have overlooked some detail. Anyhow, would really appreciate any suggestions or edits to my list.

You can save a good bit by going with a used GPU, but you do run a risk of getting a dud. I would buy one with at least a 30 day guarantee, preferably a warranty.

For example, I got my "refurbished" Sapphire Nitro Plus RX480 8gb for $89 usd (116 cad) on ebay. This card performs in between an RX570 4gb and RX580 8gb, so it was a steal for that price.

However, it shipped with some problems. I had to reflash the VBIOS before it worked other than just a basic display adapter. This didn't take long and was not hard, but I shouldn't have had to do it. Ebay would have had my back had i not wanted to deal with it.

That's exactly why I'm always skeptical about buying used and refurbished stuff, especially a critical component like a...

Better SSD. Cheaper but good PSU.

Overall good system overall for pretty much any task.

I had a HP S700 120gb SSD in my PC for awhile It was reliable for me and currently resides in a friends PC.

It still works, which is more than I can say about my even newer Kingson A400.

However, the reviews in general have a lot of failures. From my experience, it is pretty slow for an SSD. Still fast, but outpaced by other budget drives.

The Samsung 860 evo will be faster and has a proven track record of solid reliability. An intel 660p is another good option at that pricepoint.

@g-unit1111 ty for the response. I will check out the intel 660p as well. I currently switched out the HP in my newegg cart for the Samsung evo as per Nighthawks suggestion. I think my spending limit is around 1k, but tbh i was excited at the ~850$ prospect so I think I'll try to prob stay within that window

@mdd1963 Yep i'm in Canada, with conversion rates comes out to about the same ~160ish price. I appreciate you guys looking into it.

Lastly im fine with buying these new, but for the sake of penny pinching. is there any component that maybe i should consider getting refurbished/used? OR rather anything i should def NOT buy refurbished or used?

Some GPU deals on Ebay.ca with 30 day eBay guarantee.

Sapphire Pulse RX570 8gb for around $110 CAD.

That's exactly why I'm always skeptical about buying used and refurbished stuff, especially a critical component like a GPU. You could save money but then you would have a hard time getting it replaced if something goes wrong. Sure, on paper it looks like a good short term solution, but in the long run, buying something like that used is not really a good long term solution.

This is what I would suggest on that budget:

This is slightly over budget but take out the OS and it's about $900.
