I've been into computers for decades but never the hardware side of things (aside from changing hard drives and disc readers). I want to build a medium range gaming computer, but I'm not sure about compatibility and such. I'm almost positive that there's some overkill here. It's like to keep it at or under 1k. Thanks for any help. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/fVHYbv

Solution
I think the motherboard is very overkill, it costs more than your CPU. If you don't plan to use any of its special features, go with a H97 chipset motherboard.

Everything else looks OK.
I don't see any reason to spend more than this unless you want a bigger ssd

^^^ +1 to this.

Unless you're planning on overclocking (which you can't really do with a locked CPU) or multi-GPU setups, you will not notice much if any difference from one motherboard to the next. I would take the money you save by dropping down to a ~$100 motherboard and put it toward a better CPU. You can probably get an unlocked one, and still have board that's decent enough for overclocking.
