My first build

Hi everyone,

This is my first attempt at building my own computer and was wondering if I could get some advice/tips from everybody here.

Case: ANTEC Nine Hundred Ultimate Gamer Case

Processor: AMD Phenom™ II X4 945 Quad-Core 3.0GHz w/ 8MB Cache (Retail Box, Socket AM3)

Gigabyte GA-MA790FXT-UD5P w/ DualDDR3 1666, 7.1 Audio, Dual Gigabit Lan, 1394, PCI-E, CrossFireX

OCZ 6GB PC3-10666 Platinum Edition Triple Channel DDR3 Kit (3 x 2GB)

HD: Western Digital 1TB Caviar Black 7200rpm SATA II w/ 32MB Cache

DVD Drive: Samsung SH-S223Q/BEBS 22x SpeedPlus™ DVD-Writer, SATA, w/ Lighscribe, Black

Video Card: Sapphire Radeon HD 4890 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E w/ Dual DVI, HDTV-Out, HDMI

Power: PC Power and Cooling Silencer 750 Quad Power Supply, Crossfire Edition

So I'm basically wondering if all these parts are compatible, if there's anything that is unnecessary, or should upgrade and if there's anywhere I could save a few bucks

Nice build overall. I believe you can save a few bucks on the PSU if you switch to Cooler Master. Corsair is really expensive.

Looks good. I'm a fan of OCZ Platinum, but to each his own. Phenom II 720s are all the rage right now, but you're not shooting yourself in the foot (to hard) by getting a C2D. A triple-core will run any dual-theraded game more than well enough, and will handle background chores more easily, and will give you a leg-up in quad-threded games, but again, to each his own.

so I've changed the memory to OCZ 4GB PC2-6400 Platinum XTC Edition Dual Channel DDR2 Kit (2 x 2GB) and the PSU to PC Power and Cooling Silencer 750 Quad Power Supply, Crossfire Edition which will save me about $30.

As for the processor which do you think is better, AMD Phenom™ II X4 810 Quad-Core 2.6GHz w/ 6MB Cache (Retail Box, Socket AM3) or AMD Phenom™ II X3 720 Triple-Core Black Edition 2.8GHz w/ 7.5MB Cache (Retail Box, Socket AM3)?

^ only if you want to OC.

go with the 810 or a 905e if you want to future proof it on that budget.

Go for the 720 for performance now, or up it to he 940 for performance later.

Another thing I was wondering about is DDR3 memory? Do you guys think it's beneficial to get a MoBo that supports it? or is it not worth the effort

Ok, so if I change to an amd processor, then I need to change mobo and all the mobo's at Memory Express that support amd only support DDR3 memory..... so I've updated my list to it's new form
