My first ever PC build, need advice and help $1500-2000 budget (everything new)

Hello,

So I'm building my first ever PC for gaming ( I'v had a few pre-built that wasn't that impressive). I have always used xbox and PS but thought as I finally can afford to spend some money I would build my own PC.

So the parts I have "decided" on (When I say decided I mean I think they sounded good but I'm as said before a beginner at this) are mostly from tomshardware recommendations and it looks like this right now.

By the way, when i say $1500-2000 i'd rather stay in the lower end of that but I'm unsure what the actual price would be as some components are a lot cheaper where I live and other more expensive than the USA.

GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 970 Gaming HDMI DP 2xDVI 4GB

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K

Ram: Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 1600MHz

Motherboard: I have no clue, there are a few like MSI Z97 Gaming 5 and ASUS Z97-PRO (wi-fi)
but I don't really know what I need for what I'm buying. I should mention that It's highly likely that I will buy another graphics card when it drops some in price

chassi: Corsair Obsidian 750D

fans: 3 extra Corsair Air Series AF140 25mm (3 fans come with chassi).

CPU fan: Noctua NH-D15

Memory: Seagate SSHD Desktop 2TB 7200RPM/64mb/8Gb 3,5" ST2000DX001

Power: Corsair CX750M 750W

Monitor: not sure here either, though it will be a 1080p one


Approximate Purchase Date: within 1-2 weeks

Thanks for the answers so far, I do have a question regarding the CPU though. You both recommended the Intel Core i5-4690 instead of the one I listed, I'm not saying I'm right I'm just curious as to why (although the i5 is almost 150$ cheaper where I live so I don't mind if there is a reason)?
 


i7 is more for video editing or streaming, so if you do little to non of that, you'd be wasting the extra money. And is my build within your price range? Google is not giving me the right conversion.
 
i recommend a h motherboard with a non k cpu simply because at 1080p you only need 1 gtx 970 and a gsync monitor will be awesome
 


It is, I do have a few questions though if you don't mind.

That particular ram is sold out everywhere in Sweden, they do have: G.Skill TridentX 16GB DDR3 PC3-17000 2133MHz CL9 (F3-2133C9D-16GTX) (2x8GB) though at just a little more expensive, would that suffice?

Any reason why you change it to Gigabyte gtx 970? Googled it before and most seemed to say MSI had an slight edge (overclocking I think)

Other than that everything is buyable here at a decent price.
 


Yeah, except for the cpu you picked is actually more money for non OC capability. So I don't know why anyone would spend more for a non k when you can spend less for a k and the decision is yours to whether or not to OC.
 


Yeah, that RAM will be fine, I chose the 2400MHz because usually it is actually cheaper than the lower frequencies. I chose Gigabyte because they're one of the best Nvidia GPU makers, their G1 970 is one of the best, also, I thought you might want to match the GPU and mobo as the same manufacturer so you'd have to talk to less people if you have issues. I didn't choose MSI because I heard it has heat issues, but some people say it doesn't, I have no idea what to believe anymore, lol. The Gigabyte G1 is still one of the best though.
 
though still comes out cheaper with a gsync monitor even with the 2tb black..

overclocking a i5 does little to nothing for games.. same for 16gb of ram and if you sli you get like half of a gpu..

just get diminishing returns for your money when you try going high resolutions and extreme or whatever you want to say
 
Qubits, pretty much everything you said is false.

Overclocking a 4690K on a mid range AIO or a high end air cooler will give you some hefty improvement, 5FPS or more in some cases.

16GB of ram is a great thing to have. It allows for brilliant multitasking and since 8GB is becoming the standard nowadays a bit of headroom is always nice.

As for SLI/Crossfire, look at this:

so what if there is more than 50 percent scaling in some games.. still not like even half of games support multiple gpu's so not like it was really false

5fps.. better start writing home now about how great a 110 dollar cooler is for gaming

no way a pure gaming system is going to need more than 8gb of ram for years to come

if you compare the 2 builds.. they both have a 1080p monitor though one is a cheap 60hz and makes no since for sli

some the build that cost less wont hold the gtx970 back with its refresh rate so it actually has better performance
 


1-2 years perhaps, but newer games like AC:U, FC4, or BF4 already getting close to 8GB of RAM, every passing year, it'll increase by a bit, I'd rather be safe and be prepared for the future and be sorry later and upgrade once again. I'm already using over 8GB of RAM in some games, but I play on a much higher resolution and settings, so that's just me.

Perhaps 50% of games don't support multi GPUs but what about games you actually play? Pretty much every AAA title in the last few years supports it.

No need to get too witty, there's a report button you know. By 5FPS I meant that, in an average gaming computer (50FPS) overclocking will give a 5FPS performance boost (10%), which is almost the difference between the 970 and 980.

As for RAM, read lone's statement above.
 
i see nothing false about what i said and was just trying to offer practicality though your just being silly

if the op really wants to sli then there is nothing wrong with it though that monitor would be a waist of money
 
If I wanted to give him a 144Hz monitor, this would be much cheaper, has more than just 1 display port, has built in speakers, and much cheaper than paying $450 for a monitor like that. I gave him that monitor because it is an IPS panel, better picture quality and color accuracy, but if he wants higher refresh rate than a bit of better picture, then sure, I'd switch with this one.

gsync and freesync are revolutionary technologies for pc gaming that are well worth it if you can afford it. are you going to buy a new 4k freesync for your quadfire setup?
better choice but still makes little since for 970sli and nothing under 1440p would
 


G sync is great, of course, you're right on that, but with his build and only playing at 1080p, he wouldn't even need it. It's better to have a great PC than a great monitor, I bought a 4k monitor before and my system couldn't run it without heating itself to death. So I had to upgrade , no point of having great monitors if you don't have a good PC. And no, I'm not getting 4k free sync monitors, I go for the UHD TVs now instead of monitors, because I like watching 3D movies and I don't need the high response time for games since I don't play that many fast action games.
 
that sucks.. i have seen some say the world is not ready for 4k lol

i seen there is a new 5k imac though and there was plans for 8k shown at ces

i think the higher resolutions are great for like editing/rendering/htpc but not quite right for gaming yet
 
Yeah, 4k is not ready for most people to be mainstream. Takes a lot of money and determination to get it working right. I saw the 5k iMac too, my dad bought one, but I saw the specs were not exactly for gaming, so it's not for me, plus there are already so little 4k contents, not to mention how small 5k will be. But yeah, 8k would be awesome, I can't wait until I get my hands on an 8k build, it'll look as real as life :)
 
Ok hey again (sleep and work kept me busy :)).

So I revised some of my decisions based on the feedback you guys provided. I used the site you guys showed the parts on just to make it easier to look, I however left some parts out and have more than one component of some as I need to ask a few questions about it that follows:

1. I'm not really comfortable with water cooling, so I'd rather use a fan if possible. Is this crazy or do you guys have any suggestions for a good one?

2. Is higher mHz on ram better?

3. For a screen I want something fast, the picture doesn't have to be awesome as long as it's not total crap (already have a 50' TV with amazing picture).

4. For hard drive i put the Seagate SSHD on there, it was the same size and slightly cheaper than the western digital one. Is this good or not? As far as I understood SSHD is faster than a normal Hard Drive.

5. As for the motherboard, Is there any other that you can recommend? bott gigabyte gaming 5 and 7 is sold out at most stores here in Sweden (Considering the discussion before, I do want to either use SLI or crossfire down the line so something that support that would be nice)
 
This is the best air cooler with extreme ugliness, but it'll cool your CPU well. The higher the MHz on a RAM, the fastest it is, but you'll have to OC your CPU to use that max of 2400MHz of RAM, I chose that because for lower frequencies it is only $1-10 difference, but you can go down if you wish. Hybrid drives are pretty bad from what I've heard, I don't know why, but they're just bad. WD black series is one of the best HDDs you can get, they're best in overall as in performance and durability. What about this mobo, Asrock makes some of the best mobos.
