My first SSD...but why is bottom pasty looking?

So i just bought my first ever Intel 520 180GB SSD for my first ever custom built pc yay. So I take a look at the bottom and it looks like some grey, dried out cement or something is on the bottom. I watched some unboxing videos and it seems this is pretty common. My question is what is that pasty substance and can I just clean it with some water without damaging it? or what.

well it does have a sandforce controller, right?

Please do not use water on electronics. I believe isopropyl alcohol is the think to use, a picture first would be good, it may be part of the drive if you've seen it in other builds
