Hey,

My Friend built a pc and when he is turning it on the screen is just black. The fans all work but the screen is black. He has tried to connect the VGA cable to the motherboard put still no signal.
He has kept his CPU and HDD which contains his Windows, from his old PC.
What can be the problem?

Thanks!

Solution
With the graphics card removed and the VGA connected to the motherboard. make sure the system is off and unplugged. Try reseating the RAM. if you have multiple sticks, try one at a time. Make sure the 20/24 pin is plugged into the motherboard as well as the 4/8pin for the CPU.
Motherboard - ASUS B85M-E
CPU- I5 4460
GPU - GTX 960
EVGA GQ 650 Watt
We have tried to boot it up without the graphics card and it still does not work.
We suspect that it is the powersuply.

We have not yet tried a different cable.
He will try changing the ram slots after he has eaten.
I have a question tho, we received a cable to connect to the cpu from the psu and it was two 4 pins like a splitter, and we connected one of them and left out the other one, is that okay?
He will also try to start it without the HDD.

Does the CPU have a 4 pin or 8 pin connection? If it has an 8 pin, then you need to hook both up to the CPU connection. If you only hooked up one and the CPU is an 8 pin connection, then this is your issue.

Also, Windows may not work properly. When you change the motherboard on a PC, windows will not always pick up where it left off. If you can get it to boot into windows, do a complete reset. If you still have problems, you will need to do a fresh install of windows which Microsoft may not activate windows because they want you to purchase another license when you get a new motherboard.

Im so sorry for the late respons, the pc finally works. We had to switch the ram stick to a different place in order for it to start up. Thank you all for the answers!!!
