My Friend Reset His Computer But It Reset Windows Too

My Friend Reset His Laptop but he didn't know it would get rid of the operating system now every time he boots it up it says no operating system something like that , not sure, so i have a USB and im gonna install windows 8 for him but i cant use my product key because its used by me , how does he get his product key? is it the the boot menu thingy

Normally it will be on a sticker on the Laptop, if its not there it should have been somewhere in the box he got hte laptop in... if he threw it out he will need to buy a new OS to get another key. It will look something like this:

Most prebuild (DELL, HP, ect) computer with windows 8 have the key stored in an almost bios like area that windows will scan upon reinstallation IIRC..
