Recently my GPU (NVIDIA Geforce GTX 970) crashes on any game more intensive than minecraft, sound still continues, but monitor loses input until I reboot. I've tried every fix I can find/think of, including a clean install of the drivers using Darkbreeze's guide.

Suggestions on repairs are welcome, but my rig is mostly 6+ years old and I think the GPU is just kaput, I'm thinking of buying an NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1050Ti to replace it, but it's been a while since I built my rig and I'm not sure if this is completely wrong for what I have now. Any advice would be much appreciated.

My Rig:

OS: Windows 8.1
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z97X Gaming 7
CPU: Intel Core i5 4460
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970
RAM: 16GB Corsair 1600mhz Vengeance (2x8GB)
Cooling: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
Case: NZXT H440
Power: 650W Corsair CS Modular PSU

Look in Reliability History for error codes and warnings that correspond with the crashes.

The PSU is also suspect. Especially if 6 years old and has been used for lots of gaming. Likely going beyond designed EOL (End of Life).

Are you able to test the GPU in another known working computer?

And likewise try another known working GPU in your computer.

Determine if the crashes follow your GPU or stay with your computer.

The PSU was replaced three years ago, I don't have access to another PC or GPU for testing.

Reliability History gives this code in regard to the crashes:

Problem Event Name: LiveKernelEvent
Code: 117
