I recently put together a new pc with used components and when i started it for the first time it smelled a little burnt and the video-output was corrupted. After a short amount of time the graphicscard crackled followed by smoke... How do i determine if it was the graphics card or the psu that failed? Please help.

If you heard cracking and saw smoke from the GPU its pretty sure thats shot. You can try it in someone elses system, but from what you describe you may (probably will) see physical damage to the PCB.

As for the PSU, what make and model is it. Do you smell anything? Does it power up?

I took it apart and i can defenitely see some damaged components (they are black and coal-ish) so i am 100% sure that it is dead, the psu is an Corsair TX 650w.

Ok thats a good PSU. Ok so the GPU is definitely shot, now as to why, do you get any smells from the PSU? Where the cables fully plugged in? Maybe use a flashlight can you see any damage in it? Does the PC work without the GPU with it?

Since i bought it used and a couple years old, that is not possible?

The PSU don't smell, the system fires up without issues i think, but the FX-4100 don't have integrated graphics.

I dont now when the psu was originally purchased, I also lean against it being the gpu.

I'm going to assume its the older Corsair TX 650. It doesn't look like this does it?

If its not its the older unit and could be pushing 10 years old. Probably time for a new one
