HP Envy h8 1414 with Win8. Original factory 1 Tb Hard drive has failed. I made a USB recovery drive (32 Gb USB 3.0 flash drive) for the system shortly after purchase (December 2012). I've bought a Samsung 250 Gb SSD to replace the crashed hard drive. When I try to recover, it can't seem to locate the USB recovery. I've changed the boot order in the Startup to see the USB drive, but it tells me it can't locate the recovery image. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Solution
Well I've ended up finding someone with a retail copy of windows 8, borrowed their copy. The Windows repair grabbed the license number from the HP BIOS (I assume) and worked fine, and as an added bonus, no HP 'value-added' software now.

Thanks for your replies.

Yes sorry, that 'is' a lot of 'its'...

On reboot, with USB recovery stick in the computer, the computer boots into what I presume is Windows Repair/Recovery and asks for Keyboard layout, after that, it presents me with Troubleshoot and Shut Down PC options, along with Advanced Options. When I choose advanced options, I choose System Recovery.

When running the System Recovery, the dialog box tells me 'Windows is unable to find a recovery image.'

The USB recovery drive was made from the Windows Wizard? Or from the HP software? If it was from windows, we can sort that out. If it was from HP, you will have to find the software used to read from the backup file.
