my Hitachi HDD shows 0MB storage place after installing Win7

Could you advice me in the following problem:

After installing Win7 (bootable from USB pendrive) on a Hitachi 40GB IDE/PATA hard drive shows 0MB discplace. I can't initialize the drive once again. I tried to manage this problem with several programs without success. Can I use the Active Disk Editor to initialize the drive?
The formating was made with an XP machine. Connected through an USB adapter. It was a quick formating process.

40 GB is kind of a small hard drive for a Win 7 installation, and the drive must be pretty old. Either the drive is full, or it has failed, but either way you would do better with a larger HDD.
