My husband and system restore

Hello,
When I was out of town, my husband tried to restore his laptop to an earlier date. The result is windows vista now not booting up at all. I asked him to wait for me to do it, but he has no patience or computer smarts. I turn it on and black screen with mouse arrow, in any mode! safe or not. What now?

You can try a Repair setup of Vista. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial148.html

If that fails, good idea to just buy a new hard-drive for the computer and install a clean setup of Windows on that. Use the original drive with an external enclosure to copy your files back.
