My I7-4790k reaches temps of over 77C during gameplay. Too hot?

Recently I was playing Battlefield 1. I think it is the most graphically intensive game in my library. When I play it on max settings and monitor the temperature with HWiNFO, the CPU package temperature is reporting an average temperature of 77 degrees C. I read that the maximum temp for I7 4790k CPUs is 100C, but I read that the max temperature you should have for long periods of time before it becomes damaged is about 76C. I am concerned. Is this too hot?

That temperature is absolutely fine. It's just getting a little warm. I'd say if it were reaching up into the 80's that I'd do something about it but 77c isn't an issue. It might be overclocked. Multicore enhancement might be enabled. It's usually enabled by default. If that's enabled you're running at 4.4GHz all the time. It might be getting a little warm at that clock speed depending on how much voltage the system is automatically giving it.
What cooler are you using? I have an i7 4790 ( non-K) with Cooler Master TX3 Evo, and my CPU temp gets to around 55C-to-60C in BF1. If you are using a stock cooler, those temps are fine, not ideal but ok.

My cooler is a Cryorig h7

Then I am 100% sure it is not overclocked. 😀
I would remove the cooler and apply new thermal paste and test again. Also clean dust off the heatsink and fans.
