My IBM T42 ThinkPad will work only with battery.

The IBM T42 laptop is running fine on battery for as long as the battery lasts, and around a min after I attempt to charge with the AC/DC adapter it will shut off (Sleep Mode). When the AC/DC cable removed the laptop with run fine. If the laptop is running with the AC/DC adapter only (without battery) it will work between 5 - 10 mins before shuts off (Sleep Mode).

It's definitely a hardware problem. How good are you with a voltmeter, an oscilloscope and a soldering iron? I can link you to the repair manual for that model.
