After I completely wiped my hard drive and re-installed windows 7 my icon for my external hard drive now displays incorrectly. Some other icons have done it too but I figured if I can just fix one, I can apply that knowledge to the others. So far I have right clicked it chose customize then under the "Folder pictures" section "choose file" then tried to change it that way, it didn't work. Here's a screenshot of the icons current state.

After installing windows, have you installed all windows "updates" ???
usually they may contain the right and new drivers for your hardware !

Just goto the control panel and start "windows updates".
Let us know if that was enough !

Cheers, Louise.

Hi

You might see if unplugging it and reconnecting it may allow it to display properly after Windows 7 re detects it.

Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives
Go to Control Folders

A) Select (dot) Show hidden files, folders, and drives.
B) Click on the Apply button.

Look for a desktop.ini If one is there, then delete it. You may need to restart afterwards for the icon to display.

Cheers Amit

Updating and reconnecting the drive did nothing but I did fix it by using the AVG tuneup program and clicking the "Fix commmon problems" tab then checking off "icons are displayed incorrectly" and "mini icons are displayed incorrectly" options.

Often the icon file is in the root folder, and is referenced via autorun.inf when connected. If you cleared the drive, these will have gone and need to be re-created.
