My ideal camera (based on Canon)

I recently owned a Canon A70. Very pleased with it. Despite being marketed
as more point and shoot, it has the professional features you'd only have
found on a professional SLR a few years ago.
I sold it due it's being replaced by the A75, (therefore it's value would
drop rapidly), and the appearance of the A80 with fold out screen.
Another sadly missing feature from todays' cameras is proper wide angle
lenses. By that I mean 28mm equivalent. As far as I know only 3 cameras have
it. 2 are Olympus WZ cameras, and are both big, bulky and expensive (and a
nasty menu system), the other is the soon to be released Canon S60. I know I
could get a wide angle adapter for a Canon, but they add to the cost of the
camera, and it's something else to carry around. It is also bound to affect
the quality of the pictures to some extent.

As far as I can tell, the S60 is let down by no flip out screen, and small
Li-ion battery (1000MAh I believe, when a NiMH AA can go up to 2300mAh)

So, camera manufacturers, here's my wishlist. If there's a camera out there
that has these features already, and isn't in the digiSLR price range, let
me know

Canon A60-80 styling - comfortable grip, fairly small, good looking
28 to70+mm zoom equivalent (don't need >70mm, but it's a bonus)
flip/tilt LCD screen
Consumer priced
Powered by AA NiMH
Compact Flash (cheap)

Well that was silly, wasn't it? Were you not happy with the pics from the
A70? I hate to burst your bubble, but every digicam that comes out is going
to be replaced by something else eventually. Which means that no matter
what you buy, the value will drop. Maybe it's better not to buy a digicam
at all, then you don't have to worry about things like that.

Add Nikon 5400. (bit smaller than Olympus 5060)
Add Panasonic LC-1. (bit cheaper than Leica Digilux 2).

I buy after the price settles down, and sell before the price takes a
nosedive. In the meantime I expect a steady fall in value. It means I can be
always taking advantage of new features and specifications on newer models,
with minimum loss of investment. I can stand to be without a digital camera
for a couple of months.
Try to read the post in it's entirity before coming up with pointless
remarks.
In the meantime, if you have a dream camera spec, or would like to flame my
choice of features, be my guest.

Panasonic is way out of my price range, but does look very nice.
Nikon looks promising. It has all features I need, except it has quite low
capacity Li-Ion battery. Reading reviews at dpreview.com seems to review
some persitent problems with low light focusing, poor performance saving to
disk, and other problems. Reviews of the Canon A80 aer a lot more positive.
The canon is also almost half the price, but alas, no 28mm wide angle.
I may end up waiting until a better range of wide angle cameras become
available.

I have been waiting for wider than 35mm (equiv) for 5 years now. It ain't
gonna' happen unless you go fixed lens with about 28mm (equiv). Go figure?

Yes, that's right. And we won't bother buying computers etc either. But I
won one at work, where I was charged with buying a modest digicam. I had
opted for the A70, and waited for the grinding wheels of gvt beaurocracy to
move. By the time they did, I was able to get the A75, which was an
improvement on the A70. Had I waited just a little longer, then the A80
would have come in budget...heck, if I wait long enough, I could get a
Haselblad with digital back!

I'm not sure I understand this. What about:

Minolta Dimage A1 and A2?
Nikon 5400?
Olympus 5060?
Canon S60?

What is it that disqualifies these cameras?

Most of them are monsters in size and weight (couldn't be bothered to
strengthen my neck again) and the Canon snuck in since I have given up and
purchased the last time (didn't see it before)

I agree about the size. The Canon is the only hope!

(The Olympus has just had a great review in a UK magazine)
