Question My internet is INSANELY slow

Hello. I am on Chrome OS, and whenever I try to download a large file (Probably over 1 GB) after about 2-3 gigabytes of progress, the download stops and says "Download unsuccessful". I have enough storage, so what is the problem?!?

Could be beyond your control....you are dependent to some extent on the source of the files.

I posted a thread a little while ago about large files not completing and figured out it was my internet connection. Every other device running on the same internet connection works just fine.... but my Chromebook... my Chromebook.... A few weeks ago, it was fine. Now, it's just stupid how slow the connection is. It takes over 10 seconds to load a website. I can't STAND this. on my PC, it takes, at most, 2 seconds, to load websites. PLEASE HELP. I've cleared my cache, I've checked my internet speed/ download speed (Which was WELL below 1 mbps). Please reply with decent information.

Please, allow me to read your mind so I can know the exact same things you've tried.

Is this a wired connection? if so, try using a different network cable. Check router connections.
If wireless, make sure you're as close to the router as possible with nothing inbetween it and your computer. If the router is downstairs and you're up the connection will be terrible, that's how wifi is.

Son, it took me more than a minute to load this thread with a connection that's in the Kbps range, grow some patience 🆒

It's not that I am impatient. My standards are not as extremely low as the internet speeds I am getting on my device, let alone what you are getting. Anyways, I'm running on Wi-Fi.

Wi-Fi is considerably slower than Wired.
Wi-Fi is generally split into 2 common bands, 5GHz and 2.4GHz. The 5GHz band has greater speed capability, but much shorter range.

What are you supposed to have? You'll need to check with your ISP, have them do a trace on the lines. You can also run a trace-route ping, if there's a node with issues it'll show as being high traffic, so possibly it has nothing to do with you, and everything to do with construction, drunk hitting a pole, someone blew up the AT&T building......

Slow is arguable, it's an opinion. My internet is DSL over original 4-wire telephone lines from 1972, not even twisted pair or Cat 3/5/5e/6. I get 20down/5up. Meaning if the wife is watching Netflix, MIL is watching the news and the kid is doing homework, I can't game. No bandwidth left.

Also might check the data usage. Some plans say Unlimited, but really aren't. You get unlimited high speed for the first 10Gb, then after that your Gigabit unlimited gets chopped to 300Mb and speeds go in the toilet.

I think we've drifted quite a bit away from "This is the only device effected with the internet slowdown". Also, I'm gonna edit the thread to say that it was fine before.

It should be faster because this is basically the peak of the worst performance this device has reached. No, please do not take me as a low level idiot. I know a little more than "My internet is bad, I'm gonna buy a new computer to fix it". My chromebook used to have fast internet, and after a few months the internet speed somehow got worse over time. And please, PLEASE, understand that it is the ONLY device that I have that is effected. Even if I switched to WiFi on my computer, the speeds would not be as bad as the speeds on my chromebook.

Other than network performance, does it have any other performance issues?

Have you scanned your Chromebook for malware?

Not sure what kind of chrome OS network options has but if you do find one that lets you manually set your IP and gateway do it, your local IP should be something like 192.168.0.88 and the gateway 192.168.0.1, set the DNS to 8.8.8.8 (google) or 1.1.1.1 (cloudflare). actual gateway may differ.

ccleaner? wow, it refuses to die and spreads to other operating systems huh? last time I checked it was literally adware with a couple "free" options available, and that was 4+ years ago.

I like ccleaner, I find it handy. One button saves me the hassle of trying to remember all the crap I forgot about. Like orphans, temp files, cache, internet cache, visited sites logs, junk files etc.

Being too close to the router with Wi-Fi can be as big an issue as too far away. Also repeaters can cause issues, especially if the SSID isn't setup correctly. If you have any Apple products online, unless you dedicate bandwidth, they'll hog as much as they can.

I already said I have enough storage. Plus, I'm directly downloading the 5.5gb file on my 32gb flash drive, which is completely empty. I just decided to download a much smaller version of the file.

I sit about 10-15 feet from the router, as well as the modem. I use a 2.4GHZ band connection.
The chromebook I have is a Dell Chromebook 3100, with 1 usb A, 1 usb C, and a single audio jack.
