When Comcast had their DNS problems a couple months ago, I temporarily
used some public ones at ORSC Public Access DNS Nameservers at
http://support.open-rsc.org/ (although I recorded http://199.166.24.10/
in my Favorites so I could reach them if my DNS server went dead again).
I just tried going to their site and it was unreachable or down. The
web site being unreachable or down does not mean their DNS servers are
also unreachable or down. The public DNS servers they listed at that
time were:
199.166.28.10 (PS0.NS2.VRX.NET) - Atlanta, Ga
199.166.29.3 (nl.public.rootfix.net) - Nederlands
199.166.31.3 (NS1.QUASAR.NET) - Orlando, FL, USA
199.5.157.128 (ASLAN.OPEN-RSC.ORG) - Detroit, MI, USA
These are public DNS servers so there may be reliability problems (i.e.,
up/downtime) but you don't have to pay for them and you aren't stealing
someone else's DNS server resources. Otherwise, do a search at Google
on "public dns nameservers". For example, I found
http://soa.granitecanyon.com/faq.shtml through a Google search.
You could also run your own DNS server, like BIND
(http://www.isc.org/index.pl?/sw/bind/) but not many users are up to
installing, configuring, and maintaining a DNS server.
